Finishing on the podium during the fourth round of the Queensland Speedway Spares Sprintcar Series at Brisbane International Speedway (BIS) last Saturday night was the perfect start to the 09/10 season for Cameron Gessner.

Gessner and the Queensland based CG Motorsport team were very pleased with the encouraging start they have made to the 09/10 season and they hope that this is the start of a strong season where they plan to take on all the major shows throughout Australia.

“The whole point of doing this race meeting was to prepare for the World Series Sprintcar (WSS) Championship opener in two weeks time here at BIS and we feel that we are in very good shape,” Gessner enthused. “There is still plenty of improvement left in me as a driver, the car and the whole team but we have made an encouraging start to the season and it is something that I am confident we can build on as the season progresses.”

Last Saturday night at BIS, Gessner, driving the QLD # 68 Metalcorp / AUS Fuel sponsored Don Ott Race Engines prepared 410ci Chev powered Cheetah, began the night by recording the 16th fastest lap in time trials and then he finished his two heat races with a second place and a victory. Gessner’s results placed him into the ‘Top 6’ dash and he drew starting position five and that was where he finished. The finishing order in the dash decided the starting positions for the feature race and Gessner started from position five.

For the feature race Gessner was able to progress forward and by the latter stages of what was a tough 30 lap event around the BIS track he had moved into second place and that was where he stayed through to the finish.

“It was a tough track all night where there was basically only one race line around the bottom,” Gessner explained. “Since there was only one race line it had really slickened off that section of the track. All of the passing that I did came about by being able to capitalise on the mistakes of others, as when they drifted up track you had to be committed and get in there and execute a pass on the bottom.”

For the 09/10 season Gessner has been able to obtain some additional backing which includes AUS Fuel, Direct Haul and Breast Cancer Australia, adding to his existing sponsors: Metalcorp, QLD Speedway Spares, Greenies Tippers, Cheetah Performance and Don Ott Race Engines.

“This whole deal is a huge team effort and thanks must go out to both my new and existing sponsors,” Gessner commented. “All of their support is invaluable and I simply wouldn’t able to compete at this level without them and special thanks must also go out to my car owners Peter Green and Dave Horrell and the rest of the team.”

Gessner’s next hit out is going to be the opening round of the WSS Championship that is to be held at BIS on Saturday night, November 21.
