SWEET LEADS NATIONAL & WESTERN MIDGET POINTS AFTER LAS VEGAS WIN

From Dick Jordan

Brad Sweet of Grass Valley, Calif. continues as the early leader in the 2010 USAC Mopar National and Western Midget Series following his 30-lap feature victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s dirt track Thursday night and subsequent second place finish at Perris (Calif.) Auto Speedway Sunday night. The National Series resumes March 23-24 at the Hickory (NC) Motor Speedway, while the Western Series resumes April 1 at the Ventura (Calif.) Raceway.

Sweet led the first six laps at Las Vegas, then trailed Chad Boat until the white-flag lap when he regained the top spot in his Kasey Kahne Racing Ollie’s Bargain Outlet/Auto Value Spike/Mopar to win the Las Vegas Super Sprint Classic race. Boat took second after leading 22 laps, finishing ahead of Brad Loyet, Darren Hagen and Tracy Hines. Driver Alex Bowman of Tucson, Ariz. flipped during the second heat race and was transported to University Medical Center in Las Vegas for treatment of a broken collar bone, fractured rib, bruises and swelling.

Bobby East of Brownsburg, Ind. led all 30 laps of Sunday night’s “Sokola Shootout” USAC Mopar National/Western Midget race at the Perris Auto Speedway after starting from the front row in his Club Sport Ford Racing Beast/Esslinger Ford. The victory halted Sweet’s winning streak at two as Sweet took second ahead of Boat, Bryan Clauson and Jerry Coons Jr. Hagen was the fastest qualifier.

Chris Gansen of San Bernardino, Calif. flipped on lap six of the feature and was transported to a local hospital for a precautionary checkup.
