Waynesfield Raceway Park kicked off its 2010 season with a bang tonight featuring 4 classes of great racing. With the cold temperature in the area, race fans looked to the racetrack for some hot racing action to make the cool evening air a little more bearable.
In Lee’s Hydraulics Non Wing Sprint Action, it was Steve Ott of Fairmont, Indiana picking up the A-Main win after a last lap slide job on Matt Westfall resulted in contact. Ott apologized in victory lane ,saying “I drove it in there as hard as I could and I honestly thought I had Matt cleared. He’s such a good driver and was able to stick it back in there and I made a little bit of contact with him, so I really got to apologize to Matt for that” Ott was able to take a shot at the win after a late caution allowed him to slip by Mike Brecht on a restart to grab the 2ND spot. Ott had been riding the rim throughout the second half of the 25 lapper nipping the frontstrech wall on a couple occasions, but mad a daring dive under Westfall just after taking the white flag as the two headed into turn one. AS Ott slid up the track Westfall was able to hold enough momentum to stay alongside of Ott but slight contact between the 2 allowed Ott to get away and allow Mike Brecht to slip by and grab 2nd. That’s how they finished, with Dustin Trost coming home 4th and Jon Nelson rounding out the top 5. Heat Races were won by Mike Dunlap, Luke Hall, Jared Horstman, and Matt Westfall. B Main was won by Brandon Ferguson
In Miracle Motorsports Tuff Truck action, “The Juggernaut” Chris Hicks started his 2010 campaign with a feature win over 2009 WRP track champion Matt Twining , Mike Hicks, Roy Miller and Derrick Noffsinger rounding out the top 5. Chris was able to make his way to the front early and pull away from “Fat” Matt Twining late in the race to secure the win. Gabe Twining started off strong and problems late relegated him to a 12th place finish. Heat Races were won by Matt Twining and Chris Hicks.
In the Fowler and Hadding 1000cc Mini-Sprints it was Devon Dobie picking up the feature win after a late race restart allowed him to power by Nick Daugherty. “I was a little better in one and two and he was better in 3 and 4. I knew if I got by quick on the start, I might have a shot at holding him off” Daugherty came home 2nd after showing his strength on longer runs throughout the race. Defending Mini-Sprint track champ Garry Loney came home 3rd, Lee Underwood and Tyler Hesson completed the top 5.
In JR and Sons Service Center Compacts competition, It was Brian Beach jumping out to an early lead, but Jeff Kimes and Justin Durflinger powered their way through to begin battling for the lead with Durflinger able to power by for the lead. A caution with 2 to go allowd Kimes to take one more shot at Durflinger in turns 1 and 2 but Durflinger was able to power away, picking up the feature win. When asked if he finally found the ‘silver bullet’ to stop Jeff Kimes dominance of Waynesfield in the compacts, Durflinger said, “Nope. It’s a black and blue bullet.” In heat race action, it was Justin Durflinger and Dylan Herman picking up wins.
Waynesfield Raceway Park is back in action tomorrow night Sunday April 18th, with the UMP Super Late Models, Post Agri-Service UMP Modifieds, Miracle Motorsports Tuff Trucks, and JR and Sons Service Center Compacts. Pit Gate opens at 3PM. Grandstand gate opens at 4PM. Drivers Meeting at 5PM. Hot Laps at 5:15PM. Racing at 6PM. General admission is $12 for adults 16 years and older, $6 for ages 11 to 15, and kids 10 and under are free. Come out and find out why the best kept secret in racing is now out!
