From Rich Vleck, LITTLE VALLEY, N.Y. (July 3, 2010)- Bryan Howland’s Holiday dominance continued on Saturday as the three-time ASCS Patriot Champion dominated on a Patriotic Holiday Weekend at Little Valley.
Howland, of Auburn, NY, dominated the 20-lap A-Main in the Inaugural trip for the ASCS Patriots to the Little Valley Speedway. It was also the first trip to the track for the 23-year-old, who admitted during the middle of the night that it intimidated him.
Using the outside of the front row, Howland would move around polesitter Kyle Moffit in turn four coming to complete the opening circuit. A caution flag would fall after the lap was completed and after the ensuing restart, Howland would check out from the pack and never have to worry about another competitor or another yellow flag.
“I didn’t have any idea I was that far out in front until about two to go, when I could a little bit safer and check it down a few times in lapped traffic,” admitted Howland after the event, referring to the approximately three second lead he was unaware he commanded much of the event.
Despite never laying eyes on the track before what turned out to be a picture perfect Saturday, The Filtrec Corporation No. 51 team was on their game as Howland was fastest in hot laps, heats and feature.
“The guys nailed the setup, as they always do,” Howland would say after the event. “They are always right there and they have to be commended.”
Unfortunately, the second win of the year of Howland and 16th of his Patriot Career would be overshadowed by a first lap incident that resulted in significant injury for Scott Bonnell.
Doug Bowman got put sideways in front of much of the pack before the field hit turn one, sending the No. 57, along with Bonnell’s No. 3B and Tim Kelly’s No. 12 flipping down the straightaway. Kelly walked away unharmed, Bowman was dinged up physically and his car was destroyed, but Bonnell required further medical attention after complaining of significant back and neck pain.
Bonnell, of Fairview, PA, was carefully extracted from his car by medical personnel and was flown by helicopter to an Erie, PA hospital for further evaluation.
For the rest of the competitors, a full race was still to be run and the thought of Bonnell’s injury weighed heavy on the drivers.
When asked afterwards how he refocused for the task at hand, Bryan Howland admitted, “I don’t know if I really did. It was there in the back of my mind.”
A lap after the second original start, Vern Wasson spun and collected Todd Hoddick and Mike Lauterborn.
On the lap one restart, Howland pulled away and for the next 19 laps, held a healthy lead around the massive flat ½-mile. As the No. 51 was on cruise control, a spirited battle raged on for second between three young competitors.
Kyle Moffit held on to second place for most of the event in his Kill Buck Outlet No. 7. Bubba Broderick had quickly reeled him in after starting back in eighth but Moffit held strong once he found the high groove. Halfway through the event, Broderick made a bid for the runner-up spot but Moffit was able to prevail for the time being.
With two laps remaining, Moffit blew a brake caliper and surrendered second to Broderick and third place on the final corner to local favorite Jared Zimbardi.
Broderick’s was the driver to watch early in the feature as he moved from seventh to fourth within two laps of the restart and into third just a few circuits later. He continuously ran the top lane and put on quite a performance.
Zimbardi’s third helped to keep his point lead loss to Howland to a minimum. “The Juice” started in fourth and was solid for his seventh straight top-five in ASCS Patriot single-sanctioned events.
Moffit was still please with his fourth place effort on a style of track that he is not usually best on. It was also a fine showing a night after significant damage at Ohsweken and scrambling to prepare for his closest race to his South Dayton, NY home.
Don Adamczyk picked up his first Four Laps of Fame Dash, sponsored by his sponsor Pro-Syn Oil Technology. He would move up to round out the top-five to stay perfect on top-10 finishes in single-sanction ASCS Patriot events for 2010.
Kyle Drum made his first Patriot start of the year count as he drove Jared Zimbardi’s backup car to sixth. George Suprick was seventh, with Bob Reis crossing in eighth. Canadian Travis Cunningham and Brad Knab completed the top-10.
A completely full grandstand greeted the first Patriot event to be held at the Cattaragus County Fairgrounds. Scott Bonnell and Bryan Howland scored the heat wins.
