Herrera Hauls in Knoxville Win

Johnny Herrera won the 410 feature at Knoxville Saturday night. Here’s Bill W’s report.

With 410s getting two laps on the clock, Sammy Swindell (3rd car out to time) set the standard in time trials at 15.078 seconds. Don Droud Jr. (6th car out) was second quick, followed by Ian Madsen (31st), Bronson Maeschen (13th), Jonathan Allard (36th), Austin McCarl (2nd), Lynton Jeffrey (16th), Dale Blaney (18th), Brian Brown (35th) and Mitchell Dumesny (14th).

Kaeding led early in the 8-lapper, as the track was still pretty fast. Herrera was quick moving up the low side, and Brown and Swindell followed him by Logan.

Dobmeier led early, but Zomer stuck with him. With Dobmeier up high and Zomer down low, they battled most of the way. Zomer took the lead for good on lap five in a good race. Droud Jr. moved up nicely from 6th to 3rd.

Good racing again as Walker was able to hold off some strong charges by Wimmer. Veal and L. Jeffrey traded the last transfer, before Veal took it in the last corner.

Ma. Dumesny led flag to flag. Jackson was strong and grabbed second from Green with two to go. Blaney looked strong and made a late move by Maeschen and Tatnell for fourth.

Maeschen and Allard paced the field througout the 12-lapper despite a number of cautions. After one lap was completed, L. Jeffrey stopped with throttle linkage problems. He restarted at the tail and could only climb back to sixth. Bloom spun with two laps in the books. The restart saw Maeschen ahead of Allard, McCarl, Moore and Heskin. Heskin was able to crowd out Moore for fourth before a slowing P. Jeffrey brought the last yellow on lap seven. The top five would remain the same, with Jacobs just missing a transfer.

Jackson took the early lead, but Herrera controlled it from lap two on. On lap eight, T. Kaeding flipped after making contact with a stopping Madsen in turn three. Both were done, but unhurt. After an open red, Herrera led Jackson, Veal, Wimmer and Tatnell. Swindell restarted eighth, but by the time five more laps were counted, he was fourth. Zomer exited on lap ten. The lap 13 red came out for Blaney, who was running fourth. He got over the cushion and backed it into one. He was unhurt. . Herrera led Jackson, Veal, Swindell and Tatnell back to green. Swindell would take third from Veal shortly after the resart to set up the top five. Dobmeier was a late charger, coming home fifth. Herrera was able to hold onto his 17th career 410 win at Knoxville worth $3,000. Maeschen was the hard-charger and Heskin passed 12 cars.
