August 23, 2010 – Brandon Wimmer was able to ride his momentum from the Knoxville Nationals, and cruised to victory with the Midwest All Stars Series at the Bloomington Speedway in his home state of Indiana. The Fairmount driver piloted Rick Ferkel’s #0 to the win, and the pair plans on running Attica Raceway Park this weekend.
Brandon’s experience may have aided him a bit at the beautiful red clay ¼ mile oval. “I have been to Bloomington a few times, so that helps (best previous finish was 4th in 2002),” he says. “We ran there with the GLOSS series back when I was starting and again last year.”
Time trials set up the night for Brandon. “They did the Outlaw format, where the top four were inverted in the heats, and the top two made the dash,” he explains. “Qualifying ninth put us outside of row one for the heat, and we were able to win it.”
His luck continued in the dash, when series point leader, Jerrod Hull jumped the initial start. Brandon, who had drawn a spot inside of row two, assumed the pole and went on to win. That set him up on the pole for the feature.
The slick track would need precision from the driver to do well. “The track really slicked off to a big cushion in the feature,” says Brandon. “You couldn’t hit it too hard, or it would upset the car.”
He led from the outset. “We got the jump on the start, and went from there,” he says. “We were in lapped traffic early. There were quite a few guys that are not used to the wings there, so I was pretty much in lapped traffic most of the race. There were a few cautions along the way.”
Rubber developed late in the event, and Hull was quick to spot it and closed the gap on Brandon. “The car was really good,” says Brandon. “They said Jerrod Hull was coming at the end, because he had found some rubber. Luckily, I found some getting through traffic with about ten laps to go, and I was able to stay in it to the end.”
The win ended a Victory Lane drought this season for Brandon, and car owner, Ferkel. It was a great continuation for the driver, after finishing 17th in the Knoxville Nationals in Alan Barton’s #7TW. “There are no easy wins,” says Brandon. “It was great to get one in Rick’s car again. This has just been a great week, with making the Nationals and now getting the win in the #0.”
