Tuesdays with TMAC – Back on the Road!

From Bill W.

April 12, 2011 – Terry McCarl will be back in action this weekend with the World of Outlaws in Kentucky and Missouri. The plan is to run the T-MAC Motorsports #24 machine at the two facilities. The Altoona, Iowa driver was able to get some laps in last weekend at the I-80 Speedway near Greenwood, Nebraska aboard Gary Swenson’s #24A.

This will mark the last week before joining Tony VerMeer and the #55 team in their quest for a Knoxville championship. Knoxville’s practice will be Friday, April 22 and the team plans on running the Monster Energy™ Sprint Series opener in West Burlington on Saturday, April 23. “We’re looking at going to Paducah and Pevely this weekend with the #24,” says TMAC. “We’ve been working on the #55, so it will be ready for the following weekend at Burlington.”

TMAC has had his share of success at the Paducah International Raceway near Paducah, Kentucky in the past. The WoO will make their annual visit on Friday to the high-banked 3/8-mile oval. “That’s a fun place,” says TMAC. “I haven’t won there, but I set a couple of track records there. It’s a fun track and the fans are always great down there.”

One of the popular stops on the WoO circuit is the I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Missouri. That’s scheduled for Saturday night. “If I was a spectator, I don’t think I’d miss a race at Pevely,” says TMAC. “Some of the best races I’ve seen or have been a part of have been at I-55.”

A heavy track greeted 45 cars in a stout field at I-80 Speedway last Friday. TMAC would pull in early in the feature on a rough track. “It’s tough going and driving someone else’s stuff, but Gary is a great guy and I appreciate the opportunity to drive his car,” he says. “I don’t have my own 360, so it was nice for Gary to let us drive his. We had fun, and I think we learned a lot. Next time, I think we’ll be a lot faster. We were better every time out.”

In Saturday’s finale, the dry-slick surface allowed TMAC to get into a redraw spot and come home seventh. “I haven’t raced much this year, so it was good to get some laps in and we had a good time,” he says. “I need to get in racing shape. My competition at Knoxville is out racing, so we need to be out there with them.”

Sons Austin and Carson are finishing preparations for the 2011 racing season at Knoxville, but along with the #24 team, could use some sponsorship to keep going. A unique opportunity to sponsor a team for one night or more is available. “We have some great deals for sponsorship for all three of our cars,” says TMAC. “It’s a nice way to get involved with a race team. We have one-night deals, or multi-night deals too. We’d love to help more of the businesses who help racing.”

Dan McCowan asks: Beside very hard tires, what rules would make it so a low buck team can be competitive for a whole season?

TMAC Answers: The tires are big. When Huset’s had the MD-50 McCreary (right rear), a 360 won at least one feature every year with the 410’s. That was a narrow, hard, right rear. When you race on a track like Knoxville, it is difficult to beat good horsepower, but I ran two different years with one engine. You have to treat it well. Keep the dirt out of it, etc. Rev limits would help on any engines as well. When a track gets slick, it is more about a driver. I think guys just need to be smart. It’s easy to fall into the latest gimmicks, and I’m as guilty as the rest, but it really isn’t necessary. You don’t need tires every time you hit the racetrack. I don’t mind tire rules, but it should not include the left rear. I think it’s against what our country stands for. Guys who have deals with these other companies need a little flexibility and that saves money. You just have to be smart about the way you spend your money. After a lot of years, the price of some parts has actually gone down. I heard about a guy buying a $20,000 305 engine for Knoxville. Are you kidding me? You really can’t stop a guy with a lot of money from spending it either.

This Month in TMAC History!

TMAC won the first ever race in the history of the ASCS-Midwest series at I-80 Speedway on April 15, 2005. After having to pass Don Droud Jr. to win the B main, TMAC started the Mark Burch Motorsports #1m in the 16th starting spot, and aided by a caution flag, took the lead from Brian Brown on the 16th go-around. At the finish, he bested Billy Alley, Brown, Mike Chadd and Jason Martin.
