ABBOTTSTOWN, PA – (5/7/2011) – For low-buck racer Alan Krimes, the wins never seem to come easy.
And Saturday night at Lincoln Speedway was no exception.
But he used all his equipment and experience to catch race-long leader Justin Collett with a slider in turns three and four of the 20th lap to score his first win of the year in a thrilling 25-lap “410” sprint car feature that saw wheel-to-wheel racing for every position.
Krimes started fifth, caught Adam Wilt for second on the second lap, and chased third-starting Collett over the next 18 laps before making the race-winning pass. Krimes was closing on Collett as the leaders raced through heavy lapped traffic between laps 13 and 17. The second caution flag of the race for a stopped Brian Montieth (flat tire) on lap 18 put Krimes on Collett’s rear bumper for the restart. The two battled for the top spot for the next two laps before Krimes made the race-winning pass.
“I really didn’t think I was going to catch Justin,” said Krimes upon exiting his Conestoga Valley Garage/Krimes Racing Engines #87 in victory lane, “I had my wing the whole way back and his wasn’t, and I was on a tire that we used last night for time trials and the consolation at Williams Grove. Justin’s a good racer and he raced me clean, and that was fun.”
Collett, seeking his first Lincoln “410” sprint win, settled for second, with 11th-starting Fred Rahmer crossing third, Wilt fourth, and Danny Dietrich fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Aaron Ott, Brian Leppo, Brent Marks, Jim Siegel, and 21st-starting Adam Lawrence.
Heats for the 26 “410” Sprints were won by Dietrich, Collett, and Frank Cozze, with Gerard McIntyre, Jr. winning the consolation.
Glenndon Forsythe picks up 358 Sprint win
Glenndon Forsythe became the sixth different winner in as many races in the 20-lap “358” sprint car feature.
Forsythe started sixth and caught polesitter and race-long leader Logan Wagner for the lead just before the first caution of the event came out for a Mike Duncan, Jr. spin in turns three and four of lap nine. Duncan also collected Dale Hammaker, but both cars were able to continue.
Despite torrid racing in behind, Forsythe never gave up the lead. On lap 19, Wagner brought out the red after jumping the cushion and riding the wall through turns one and two. Eighth-starting Jeff Rohrbaugh assumed second for the restart, with Billy Dietrich coming from the back after a seven-car tangle on the opening lap to cross third. Logan Schuchart and Tim Wagaman completed the top five, with Michael Ruttkamp, Keith Prutzman, 24th-starting Chad Trout, Nathan Berwager, and alternate starter Billy Pauch, Jr. rounding out the top ten.
Heats for the 33 “358” Sprints were won by Wagner, Ruttkamp, Rohrbaugh, and Dietrich, with Niki Young winning the consolation.
Duane Watson wins 2nd in-a-row in Thundercars
Abbottstown’s Duane Watson charged from his 12th-starting spot to take the lead from race-long leader Bob Johnson on the ninth lap and drove away to his second win in-a-row in the 20-lap Thundercar feature.
Coming on late was 10th-starting Brian Walls who passed 14th-starting Danny Beard for second with three-laps to go to finish second. Point-leader and two-time winner Sam Gallagher finished third, Beard fourth, and Mike Slaybaugh fifth.
Completing the top-10 were Kyle Martin, Johnson, Todd Miller, Roy Warehime, and polesitter Justin Mong.
Heats for the 19 Thundercars were won by Brian Walls and Bob Johnson.
Next weekend Lincoln Speedway will move to a Sunday night race, May 15th, to host SPRINT CAR SPECTACULAR NIGHT in conjunction with the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing (EMMR) Benefit race featuring the Lawrence Chevrolet 410 Sprints and Keizer Aluminum Wheels 358 Sprints. Gates will open at 5 PM with time trials getting underway at 7 PM.
