Justin Watt made a positive start to his 2011/12 wingless sprint season by finishing last weekend’s Sydney Speedway opening race meeting on the podium.
The defending Sydney Speedway wingless sprint track champion drove strongly throughout the night aboard his NSW # 90 Hydraulink Fluid Connectors supported Eagle and was rewarded with a third place finish on the podium.
Watt started from position four in the feature race field by virtue of his second place finish in his qualifying heat race earlier in the night and had his hands full throughout the 15-lap event. The feature race highlight was the tussle for the final spot on the podium between himself and star guest driver, six-time Australian sprintcar champion, Garry Brazier.
“It was awesome to run wheel to wheel with a driver of the calibre of Garry [Brazier], but I didn’t really treat him any differently to any other driver and just raced him for position,” said a satisfied Watt. “The wingless sprint class is a very competitive one and any time that you can come away with a podium finish, it’s very satisfying.”
Watt’s 2011/12 season plans are to attempt to defend the Sydney Speedway Track Championship, and also to contend for the Australian Title, which is set down for Sydney Speedway in February of next year, winning spoils.
“It’s going to be a massive season, as we have a lot of racing at Sydney Speedway and, aside from the track championship, we are working towards building up to the Australian Title,” he enthused. “The Australian Title is going to be really tough and I’m quietly confident of being a front running contender and nothing else, especially since it’s held at my home track.”
The next event for Watt is going to be this Saturday night (October 22) back at Sydney Speedway.
