Brian Brown – Back Home!

By Bill W

March 26, 2012 – After a successful hiatus west with the World of Outlaws on the west coast, Brian Brown and the Brian Brown Racing Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 team are back home. The team hits the 81 Speedway near Wichita, Kansas Saturday with the NCRA. The trip finished up with a shortened Mini-Gold Cup at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, California.

The team knew the west coast swing would be tough. “We went out west to work on our program, and make sure we’re ready to go,” Brian says. “That’s what we did. We knew we would take some lumps along the way, and Friday night was one of those nights.”

The Mini-Gold Cup prelim was held Friday night, and though he looked good in hot laps, Brian struggled to qualify 25th. “We had the quickest time in hot laps, but I think we changed for our qualifying effort,” he says. “I didn’t feel I charged the track the way I should have on my qualifying laps. A tenth of a second would have put us in the top sixteen and at the front of a heat race.”

Starting in the fourth row in the heat, Brian failed to make up any ground, and was mired in the back of a one-lane B main. “We went the wrong way with the car for the heat,” he says. “I just had a lot of issues, and things just got worse as the night went on. When we went out for the B, it was already laying rubber. That was one of those nights. You race 100 and you have highs and lows…this was just one low.”

The trip was highlighted by a run from 23rd to 5th in Las Vegas with the WoO. “Overall, I think it was a good swing,” says Brian. “We would have liked some better results at times, but we learned a lot and we’ll get ready for Wichita.”

Brian is excited for Saturday’s race at Wichita. “We’ve ran really well there in the past,” he says. “We’ve been able to come from back in the pack and win. The wind is always a big issue, but hopefully, the weather cooperates.”

The following weekend finds the team at I-80 Speedway near Greenwood, Nebraska where Brian has dominated Victory Lane several times the last few years. “I’m happy to be back home, and in Casey’s, FVP, Searsboro Telephone Company, Impact, Champion and Ditzfeld country,” he says. “We’re happy to be back in the Midwest, going to some tracks we’ve done well at.”

Brian’s Q&A

Melinda Brown asks: Are you still planning on running the King’s Royal at Eldora in July?

Brian answers: Right now, that’s tentatively on the schedule. That’s a race that we’ve never been able to do, and I feel like we need to go do it and see how we stack up with the best of the best. Right now, that’s the plan, and we hope we can go do it.
