HANOVER, PA , 6/22/12 – Westminter, Maryland’s Steve Owings used a lapped car to his advantage to drive under polesitter and race-long leader Trevor Little and take the race lead entering turn one, and drove away to his third win of the year in the 25-lap “358” sprint car feature at Trail-Way Speedway Friday night.
Owings started seventh at was already in turn by the end of lap three. He caught Keith Prutzman for second on lap seven and then chased down Little following a 11th-lap restart for Austin Hogue, who came to a stop with a flat tire.
“That was fun!” said Owings upon exiting his Valentine Motorsports/Westminster Transmission #35 in victory lane, “The promoters work real hard here to give us a racey track, and it certainly was tonight.”
“We looked down and the motor was buried,” continued Owings, “I decided to run it ‘til it blew up. Trevor was running good, and I figured my only chance was to wait until lapped traffic. Fortunately, we got it.”
Mike Bitttinger, who started eighth, caught Little at the line for second, with Little, Jeff Rohrbaugh, and Prutzman completing the top five. Sixth through tenth were 13th-starting and hard charger Kyle Moody, Hogue, Mike Duncan, Jr., Zach Euculano, and West Irwin.
Heats for the 18 “358” sprints were won by Little and Shane Hoff.
Gene Knaub came from sixth starting spot to win the 25-lap Precision Racing Products “358” late model feature.
Knaub advanced to third by the end of lap three, caught Pat Beard for second on lap eight, and drove under front row starter and race-long leader Travis Mease for the lead exiting turn two of lap 11.
Mease settled for second, with Pat Beard, Bobby Beard, and Grant Adams completing the top five.
With his fifth place finish, Adams took over the Precision points lead from Larry Baer, who finished eighth.
Heat winners for the 13 “358” late models were won by Steve Billet and Bobby Beard.
Chad Weaver used a lapped car to make a last-turn pass and win the 15-lap limited stock feature. Rod Weaver, who took the lead when Matt Chronister dropped to the infield on lap 10, finished second, with Allen Haines, Shawn Crunkilton, and Robbie Carroll rounding out the top five.
Heats for the 21 limited stocks were won by Matt Chronister, Haines, and Rod Weaver.
Tomorrow night, Saturday (6/23), Trail-Way will host the 600cc and 270cc Micro Sprints. Also on the schedule are the Saturday Limited Stocks, Scramble Cars, and Strictly Stocks. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. with racing beginning at 6:30 p.m.
