Pavement Learning Curve Continues for Abreu

PETERSEN MEDIA

Rico Abreu continues to gain experience on pavement in his first season with the USAC National Midget Series, and the Californian tallied 12th and 13th place finishes over the weekend.

Checking into the Toledo Speedway on Friday, Abreu and his Keith Kunz Motorsports team timed in 13th quickest out of the 20 cars assembled in the pit area.

Scoring a second place finish in his heat, Abreu was started the 30-lap feature in the 13th spot.

Once underway, Abreu held strong in the 13th spot, as he simply continued to follow other competitors as the race provided very little passing.

In the closing laps, Abreu was able to move up to the 12th spot, where he would go on to finish.

“The pavement stuff continues to give me some trouble, and especially when there is very little passing,” he explained. “If I can qualify a little better it would put us in better shape for the feature.”

Saturday night, Abreu was again in action as he made his debut at Grundy County Speedway in Morris, IL, and he turned in nearly an identical performance to his Friday night effort.

Qualifying 14th, Abreu struggled in his heat, as a seventh place finish put him in the B main for one last attempt at making the 50-lap feature.

A third place finish, transferred the youngster to the A, where he would earn his qualifying time back, and start in the 14th spot.

Again holding strong in his spot, Abreu bid his time as he again moved up from 14th to 13th late in the feature, and would go on to finish in the 13th spot.

“I have to thank Keith and all the guys, for working their butts off, and giving me tips as I continue to learn, and figure out this pavement deal.”

Rico and his team would like to thank Abreu Vineyards, Toyota, ButlerBuilt, Kaeding Performance, Stadelhofer Construction, Outlaw Wings, Swift Metal Finishings, and Petersen Media for their partnership.

ON TAP: Abreu and his KKM team will now look over a few different schedules and decide on a race for this weekend.
