Cornell Claims Clyde Wood Memorial

From XXSpeedway

The weeks leading up to the 10th annual Clyde Wood Memorial Race at Double-X Speedway were filled with anticipation about what the event would be. It lived up to expectations and provided an evening packed with racing excitement. With a large field of ASCS Sprint Cars checked in and increased car counts in other divisions, the pits were filled to capacity and then some on Sunday evening.

Headlining the event was the 30 lap feature event for the ASCS Sprint Cars. With nationally known competitors such as Tim Crawley, Terry Gray, and Brian Brown, and ASCS Warrior Region stand outs Kyle Bellm, Double-X regular Jonathan Cornell and Randy Martin and all sharing the same race track, fans knew they were watching something special. The racing began with the qualifying heats all filled with strong competitors. In heat one, Jon Corbin took the lead at the drop of the green flag and was not to be headed as he led all eight laps to claim the victory. Jonathan Cornell advanced from his fifth starting spot to claim second, Mitchell Moore was third and Tyler Blank claimed fourth. The second heat rolled onto the clay and Josh Fisher claimed the victory after escaping a first turn tussle that saw Cody Baker, David Brown and Brad Graham all three wind up upside down and unable to continue in the event. At the conclusion of this race it was Fisher, followed by Tim Montgomery and Brian Bell. The third heat saw Jay Russell claim the victory over Randy Martin. Evan Martin and Taylor Walton. The fourth heat was all Tim Crawley as he claimed the victory over Kyle Bellm, Zach Pringle and Brian Brown.

The top eight ASCS drivers in passing points took to the track just before intermission to settle the staring line up for the first four rows of the feature event. The dash saw Josh Fisher and Jay Russell on the front row but it was all Jay Russell as he led from green to checkered. Following Russell across the stripe were Randy Martin, Cornell, Crawley, Montgomery, Fisher, Corbin and Walton.

The B Feature event was claimed by Brad Graham, coming back from the heat race incident to run strong in this event. Also transferring from the B to the main event were TJ Muths, Chris Ackland and Miranda Arnold.
The crowd was on it’s feet for the start of the A feature event. California’s own Randy Martin moved to the point early in turns one and two and proceeded to lead the next 19 laps as the field began to sort itself out as to who would be contenders. After just a few laps a familiar car was stalking Martin around the tight clay oval, Jonathan Cornell began challenging Martin for the top spot. Martin was able to hold Cornell off until two cars spun in turn three and Martin’s Yellow #14 Diamond Motorsports entry was unable to avoid them. After restarting under the caution, Martin retired to the pit area. Cornell made the most of the opportunity leading the next eleven laps to secure the victory. It was not a cakewalk though as Tim Crawley closed up on the rear bumper of Cornell’s # 28 with two laps to go. Following Cornell and Crawley under the checkered were Kyle Bellm in third, Josh Fisher in fourth, Jay Russell claimed fifth, Jon Corbin, Taylor Walton, Zach Pringle, Terry Gray and Evan Martin rounding out the top ten.

In the 600cc Micro Sprint feature, Corey Nelson of Eugene claimed the victory. Nelson proves that running the high line can be very successful at Double-X as he has used this line to claim more than one feature victory this season. Following Nelson across the stripe were Ryan Marsch of Jeff City, Columbia’s Dean Hathman, Kyle Schlotz of Jeff City and Scott Hathman of Columbia completing the top five. In positions six through ten, Columbia’s Blake Bennington Nick Schaefer and Tyler Key both of Marshall, Mitch Workman of Belle and Marshall’s Clayton Hisle were the finishing order. Heat victories were claimed by Nelson and Marsch.

The Street Stock division saw a close finish as California’s John Clancy Jr. claimed the victory over Jeff City’s Curt Turpin. Cole Graves of Fulton was third, Tipton’s Tim Cressley and Harlan Dowell crossed the line in fourth and fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Dale Berry of Tuscumbia, Eldon’s Keeth Strange, Dylan Bias of Centertown, Nick Turner of Jeff City and Henley’s Andrew Roark. Heat races were claimed by Clancy and Berry.

The Hobby Stock division completed the card for the event with Sedalia’s Will Register claiming another feature victory. Following Register to the checkered were Rudy Wirts of California, Travis Arnold of Otterville, Eldon’s Laura Atkinson and California’s AJ Wirts.

A huge thanks goes out to Roy Wood and Impact Signs of Sedalia MO as well as numerous sponsors that are listed on www.xxspeedway.com. It was a great show and a wonderful tribute to a greatly missed friend and dirt tracks finest flagman, Clyde Wood.

Racing will return next Sunday evening at Double-X as the 600cc Micros will once again join the 360 Winged sprints, street stocks, and hobby stocks. Visit www.xxspeedway.com for updated points or contact information.
