Scotty Simpson Grabs His 1st Mel Kenyon Midget Series Win at US 24 Speedway

From Eric Bunn

Lebanon, IN — (September 8, 2012) — Scotty Simpson took advantage of his pole position start to put his name in the USSA Mel Kenyon Midget Series win column for the first time at US 24 Speedway, Saturday night September 8.

Simpson battled a determined Kent Kriegbaum and a challenging US 24 Speedway track for 30 laps. Kriegbaum briefly took the point on lap 20. Then Simpson slid under Kriegbaum going into turn four on lap 22 to grab the lead for good. The two leaders never missed a beat while the race pace was slowed by five yellow flags.

Point leaders Travis Young and Dameron Taylor traded punches through out much of the race, with Taylor getting the better of the match, coming home in the 3rd spot. Young eventually finished the race in 5th. Simpson’s brother Grant took the 4th position to fill out the top five.

The other two Mel Kenyon Midget Series Championship combatants Jessica Bean and Cordy Horn ended the night in 7th and 8th respectively allowing Bean to put some distance between herself and Horn.

The point race closed up following the US 24 Speedway event. Young will take a 39 point advantage over Taylor into Anderson Speedway on Saturday October 6. The two drivers will settle the championship on Anderson’s high banks.

Taylor and Young each won their heat races.

The USSA Mel Kenyon Midget Series will put a cap on the 2012 season and Championship on Saturday October 6 at Anderson (IN) Speedway. The night’s racing activities will also feature the Must See Racing Super Modifieds.
