Andy Gregg returned to action over the weekend during one of the biggest racing weekends in California, the 59th Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions, and the Placerville, CA driver ended up ninth in the B after winning the C main.

After scoring third in the feature in 2011, Gregg’s luck was much different this year as he piloted the 7Industries/Guts/Ervin Sales Group No.53 over the weekend.

With action getting underway on Thursday night, Gregg timed in 31st fastest putting him deep in his heat race. A sixth place finish in his heat wasn’t enough to put him in the feature, and he was forced to make a stop in the LCQ.

Starting 11th in the B, Gregg was able to move up nicely as he took advantage of a few double file restarts. The final one came with two to go as he had advanced to the fifth spot right behind Bobby McMahan.

Using a strong run on the final lap, Gregg attempted to sneak under McMahan heading to the stripe but was unable to, and ended up in the sixth spot.

Friday night was another complete night of action, and Gregg started it off by timing in 34th quickest of the 47 cars checked into the pit area. Scoring a ninth place finish in his heat, Gregg found himself lined up in the 14th spot of the LCQ.

Unable to move through the field as well as he did on Thursday, Gregg would score a 10th place finish in the B- setting him up for Saturday night, where he would start on the pole of the C main.

Picking up the easy win in the C, Gregg lined up 15th in the LCQ looking to run the alphabet to make the feature event. Though the track was extremely heavy, Gregg would gain several spots as he worked up to ninth, but missed the transfer by just three spots.

“It wasn’t the type of weekend we were hoping for,” said Gregg. “We didn’t qualify well either night, and that just set us back in our heats. We had a shot at the A on Thursday but couldn’t make it happen. I have to thank all my guys for sticking it out and working their butts off all weekend long.”

Andy would like to thank 7industries.com, GUTS Racing, Ervin Sales Group, Autism Awareness, Pro Shocks, King Racing Products, BR Motorsports, The Air Tool, River City Alarm, Poor’s Equipment Repair, K and T Fab, Brown and Miller, Tarvin Images, C&R Racing, Amerikote, Meyer Motorsports, and Hinchman Racing for their support during the 2012 season.
