Kaley Gharst – Clean Sweep at Davenport!

By Bill W

October 5, 2012 – Kaley Gharst is the all-time leader in feature wins with the Sprint Invaders. He added to that last Friday night when he took home win #21 in Davenport, Iowa at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds in the Scadden Construction #6. A spin out at 34 Raceway near West Burlington, Iowa sent him to the back of the pack, but he stormed back to finish fourth there on Saturday.

It couldn’t have gone much better for Kaley on the Davenport ½-mile Friday night starting with the heat race. “Things started well,” he says. “We drew the number one pill for a change! We were able to get the heat race win. The car was working really well. The track was really narrow at that point.”

The Decatur, Illinois driver would start from the pole and win the Dash. “The track started widening out,” says Kaley. “We were lucky again drawing the one. The cushion was moving up the track. We made a few changes including the gearing. We were able to pick up the win there and drew a two for the feature.”

John Singer provided a fresh motor for the team and Kaley led every lap of the feature. “We made a few changes,” he says. “We changed the fueling. We had a new motor in this weekend, so we were trying to get the fueling and everything set on it good. We ended up hitting it well for the feature. The motor and car were really running good. We were able to get out there and lead every lap.”

Things moved south to the 34 Raceway on Saturday. “We drew one again for the heat and we were able to win it,” says Kaley. “The car was working well again. We drew an eight for the Dash and ended up in a crash. We weren’t able to restart, so that put us starting outside of row four for the feature.”

The team made repairs to the wing panel, the front wing and posts and a shock for the main event. Kaley would have to overcome more to climb to fourth. “I got up to third and then just made an error,” he says. “I was trying to come from the top to the bottom in one and two and misjudged it. I drove it in too hard and spun it out. We started in the back and came back up to fourth, so that wasn’t bad.”
