Abbottstown, PA — (May 25, 2013) — It was one for the ages on Saturday night at Lincoln Speedway.

“It was pure luck,” said Montieth upon exiting his Premier Auto Works/Auto Locator #21 after a thrilling 30-lap Hilly Rife Memorial 410 sprint car win in victory lane, “I just wasn’t following that mess in…and trying to stay whatever was going to happen.”

And it happened.

Time trials and an inversion of eight put one-time 2013 Lincoln winners Jim Siegel and Danny Dietrich on the front row for the start.

Siegel drove away to the early lead while Dietrich stumbled on the start and yielded to row two starters J.J. Grasso and Gerard McIntyre, Jr. on the first lap. Dietrich rebounded to reclaim third from Grasso on lap three, and then raced wheel-to-wheel with McIntyre from laps six through 11 before moving back into the runner-up spot.

And the chase was on.

Dietrich closed on Siegel and raced side-by-side with the Mason Dixon Vault Company #59 for two laps before sliding in front of Siegel to grab the lead on lap 14. Dietrich led the next ten laps before Siegel reclaimed the lead in heavy lapped traffic on lap 24. Dietrich and Siegel passed each other in every turn as Dietrich was scored the leader again on laps 25 and 26. During the war for the front, Dietrich and Siegel made contact twice exiting turn four, with both driving out of potential crashes in heavy lapped traffic.

Siegel reclaimed the lead on lap 27, just before hopping what little cushion was left in turn four, riding the wall, and coming to a stop in front of Dietrich with front-end damage, ending his brilliant run.

Dietrich, nearly out of control himself, slowed just enough for third-place Montieth to cross four-thousands of-a-second in front of him at the flagstand as the caution flag was coming out.

“Lapped traffic was tough,” added Montieth, “No matter what you did, you couldn’t get by anybody, and I just happened to pick the right line at the right time.”

Montieth led the rest of the way, but a late charge by points leader Fred Rahmer, who started seventh, made it close at the end. Rahmer caught Dietrich with two laps to go, and Dietrich settled for third. Alan Krimes, who started eighth, fell as far back as 11th before recovering the finish fourth, with tenth-starting Brent Marks completing the top five.

Sixth through tenth were Billy Dietrich, Stevie Smith, 16th-starting Cory Haas, Adams Wilt, and Ryan Smith. Jacob Allen came from 24th starting spot to finish 11th.

Heats for the “410” Sprinters were won by Montieth, Danny Dietrich, and Siegel, with Steve Storrie winning the consolation. Fast time in time trials over the 29-car field was set by Krimes with a one-lap time of 13.209 seconds (102.203 MPH).

Rookie Chandler Leiby, grandson to promoter Bob Leiby, scored his first career win in the 20-lap “358” sprint feature.

Leiby, who won’t be 16 until October, was the second straight rookie and second straight 15-year-old to win at Lincoln. He started on the outside of the front row following a first lap spin by front row starter Isaac Sneeringer, and led the entire way. Sixth starting Tyler Ross chased Leiby the entire way, and closed onto Leiby’s back bumper from laps 17 through 19. Ross tried to root under Leiby for the race lead on turn two of lap 19, but Leiby held his line to drive away to the .63-second win.

Ross settled for second, with tenth-starting Austin Hogue, 12th-starting Niki Young, and 11th-starting Jeff Rohrbaugh completing the top five.

Cody Fletcher started on the pole, but hung on for a career-best eighth place finish. And lady driver Brie Hershey earned a well-deserved ninth-place finish after coming from the rear following an opening lap crash.

No one was injured in a seven-car melee that blocked the track and brought out a red flag on lap 13. D.J. Montgomery and Jay Galloway were flip victims in the crash.

Heats for the 27 “358” Sprinters were won by Ross, Mark Strickler, and Young, with Brian Allman winning the consolation.

Lucas Montgomery made a last-turn pass to win a three-car race to the checkered in yet another thrilling feature on the night, the 15-lap Central PA Legends event.

Bob Stough took the lead and at the outset and led every lap until the final turn to the checkered. Montgomery scored his second career Lincoln win by mere inches over Stough, with polesitter Scott Haudeshell crossing less than a carlength behind in third. Harlon Leppo and one-time 2013 Lincoln winner Rick Miller completed the top five.

Heats for the 30 Legends were won by Haudeshell, Stough, and Harlen Leppo, with Rick Hartwig winning the consolation.

Next Saturday night, June 1st, at 7:30 PM, the Lawrence Chevrolet 410 Sprints and Keizer Aluminum Wheels 358 Sprints will be back in action and joined by the All-American Outlaws. Gates will open at 5:30 PM with racing action getting underway at 7:30 PM.
