Hawes takes thriller at Marysville

From Marysville Raceway Park

Marysville, CA — (June 15, 2013) — It was arguably the best trio of feature events presented all year. Jeremy Hawes, Cort Dozier and Scott Kinney had their hands full in their respective features as Misty Castleberry continued her dominance of the Pro 4 season. It was Arnes Paint’s Night at the Races at Paul and Kathy Hawes’ Marysville Raceway Park. An incredible night of wheel to wheel racing was presented on the wicked-fast MRP clay.

The featured MRP Wingless Sprint Car feature was “as advertised”. Point leader Rowdy McClenon and Jeremy Hawes had a terrific duel for the lead over some 16 of the 20 scheduled laps. Pole sitter Hawes seemingly was going to run away with this one after a couple of circuits until 6th starting McClenon cleared the rest of the field on lap 4. A straightaway separated the two championship contenders at that point. McClenon then rushed in on Hawes and it was on from there. This was really good stuff.

McClenon looked low, high and in every other available avenue to get by Hawes, It was not going to be. At ½ way McClenon tried to force his way past on the inside of turn 4. Hawes responded and both cars were doing some tank slapping down the chute. Hawes remained ahead and McClenon was on the march again and closed in on Hawes repeatedly. Each time Hawes repelled the challenge.

The pair roared across the finish line with the fans on their collective feet with Hawes grabbing the checkers with McClenon right there at the end in 2nd. Hawes took a small bite out of McClenon’s point lead with the victory. Peter Paulson ran a solid 3rd.

Hawes and Derek Dozier won the heats. Misty Castleberry took a wild ride on lap 1 of the feature as she flipped up and over the car of fellow rookie Johnny Burns. Castleberry walked away uninjured.

Hawes picked up the lion’s share of the purse and the Contingency Connection’s bonuses for the victory.

The MRP Super Stock feature was just as compelling as the sprint car show. After a few solid laps in the lead Sean Hulsey experienced a yellow flag slowdown that put Ray Trimble and Cort Dozier right on his tail for the restart. Both veterans got by Hulsey at the new green and locked up in a race-long duel that kept the fans riveted to the action on the track. In and out of traffic, the pair was inseparable. Dozier did everything but stand his hot rod on its nose to get by Trimble. Trimble had Dozier covered…or at least that’s the way it appeared. Coming to the white flag Trimble encountered a slowing Matt Magenheimer as he approached turn 3. It was 3 wide for a split-second and Dozier dove for the bottom. It worked. Dozier then took it home to the checkers with Trimble and Hulsey in tow. It was simply a terrific stock car race.

Dozier and Mike Walko got the heat race wins. It was Walko’s 1st.

Scott Kinney came from 6th to 1st in a terrific high-side ride to the front in the BCRA Midget Lite feature that kept everyone on the edge of their seats. For more on that event go to bcraracing.com.

The Pro 4 feature was another easy triumph for Misty Castleberry as she led wire to wire in that 20 lapper. 4 time champ Tim Maclaughlin made a run at her in the late going, but Castleberry was simply too quick. Castleberry also won the heat race to sweep the program. She is on a roll in the Pro 4s as she is in the MRP Mini Stocks. She continues to win when she competes in either division.

Next week, the MRP Winged Sprint Cars return with their 100mph sideways slides. It will be KIDZ NITE at the raceway. All children 12 and under are admitted FREE to the races. There will be some great giveaways including bicycles for lucky youngsters. The MRP Super Stocks, Mini Stocks and Hobby Stocks will return. We’ll see you there!
