Oberline, KS — (July 2, 2013) — The United Rebel Sprint Series hasn’t had many races at Thomas County Speedway in Colby.

But when the Rebels have taken to the 3/8-mile, high-banked dirt oval, the races have been memorable.

URSS founder Rick Salem is hoping for more of the same this weekend as the Rebels take to the storied track in northwest Kansas.

The last time the URSS competed at Thomas County Speedway was in 2011, when Luke Cranston took home top honors. The Rebels did not compete at the track last year.

In 2009, Jason Martin was the winner of the inaugural event in Colby, while Michael Williams followed him with a win in 2010.

The track normally has races on Sunday night, but the special showing with the sprint cars of the URSS will be at 7 p.m. Saturday. Pits open at 4 p.m., with grandstands opening at 5:30 p.m. and hot laps at 6 p.m.

The races Saturday at Colby are part of a Kansas Region battle. Ray Seemann leads the division with 1,158 points through nine races. He’s followed by young gun Zac Taylor, who is second with 1,076 points in eight races.

Richie Dewell (1,006 in eight races) and Cranston (984 in seven events) round out the top four. Brian Herbert, a two-time URSS national champ and defending winner of the series, is fifth with 858 points in six races.

The Colorado Region of the series jumps back into action Thursday night for a special Fourth of July show at El Paso County Speedway in Calhan, Colo.

URSS drivers have frequented the dirt track several times since 2010. Brian Hardman has won four of the last five races there. Jake Bubak was the only other driver to win a URSS event at the track in 2012, keeping Hardman from sweeping all five races.

Races Thursday in Calhan are set for 5 p.m. Mountain time, with grandstands opening at 2 p.m. and hot laps at 4 p.m.
