Rohrbaugh Wins at Trail-Way

Hanover, PA — (August 2, 2013)After a hour-long, 25-lap feature which featured two lengthy red flags, West York’s Jeff Rohrbaugh won Friday night’s survival of the fittest in the 358 sprint division at Trail-Way Speedway.

Not surprisingly, the fittest were led by the two leading feature winners in track history.

“I told my wife that the (number) 6 was not going to pass me on the top,” Rohrbaugh said after he claimed his third victory of the season and 27th of his Trail-Way career by edging 31-time feature winner Brad McClelland by less than two car-lengths at the checkered flag. “You know, Brad’s a hell of a driver. He’s just got his stuff operating.”

However, while Rohrbaugh had to deal with McClelland, who had won the preceding two features at Trail-Way, over the final nine laps to win, Rohrbaugh didn’t have to pass McClelland. Instead, Rohrbaugh steered past race-long leader Robbie Kendall on the 16th tour of the Adams County oval, one lap before disaster struck for Kendall.

Bidding for his second triumph of 2013 at Trail-Way, Kendall’s car veered high into the fourth turn to allow Rohrbaugh to pass. Before Kendall could complete another lap, the left front suspension broke on his No. 55K. The car flipped violently in the third turn before landing into the catch fence above the concrete wall. The fence caught Kendall’s car, but several poles were bent. The crash forced a 20-minute delay while track personnel removed the car.

That produced the second  red flag of the feature. The first came when Matt Campbell’s car made contact with the No. 17E of Cris Eash and flipped into the first-turn wall, ending Campbell’s night and leading to a rare fuel stop with no green-flag laps completed, but with 22 caution laps down. The crash came after polesitter Cody Fletcher’s car spun in front of the field in the third turn on the initial start. Eash could not avoid Fletcher’s car and nosed into it..

Despite all of that, Eash  who began his night by winning his heat race, eventually placed fifth behind third-place finisher Tim Wagaman and Austin Hogue. Spring Grove’s Zach Eucolano, who started 16th, placed seventh and won the Hard Charger Award.

Meanwhile, Rohrbaugh, whose own starting position benefited from the early accidents, followed Kendall for 14 laps before a caution flag waved for debris. After the restart, Kendall led one lap before Rohrbaugh, who earlier won his heat, made his winning pass.

“Luckily, we got to the front before him,” Rohrbaugh said about McClelland, who shared a fourth-row starting spot with Rohrbaugh at the start of the race. Rohrbaugh then admitted his engine was overheating and said, “She laid down there a little bit, but I kept my foot in there and Jim Travis makes good horsepower whether it runs 7,400 (rpm) or 8,400.”

In other action, Johnstown’s Jim Young, who soon turns 54 years old, led all 20 laps from the outside pole at the start to take the 600cc Micro Sprint Championship, which offered extra money to the purse for the 18 competing cars. Heat winner Tyler Esh, who started fourth, placed second, 1.18 seconds behind Young, to place ahead of Travis Esh, Shawn Seifert and heat victor Brad Weber.

Jason Chronister worked his way past outside polesitter Donald Hopkins Jr. on the seventh lap and claimed the 15-lap limited stock feature. Because of a late caution flag, Chronister had to win a one-lap shootout by .77 second over Rob Nicklow, who claimed second ahead of Hopkins. Robbie Carroll placed fourth while Cory Weishaar took fifth spot. The win was Chronister’s first of the season at Trail-Way.

The division drew the most cars, 32, among the 86 cars in the pit area and so required the lone consolation of the night after heat wins by Hopkins, Nicklow and Wes Kellison. Terry Hartlaub claimed the consolation win.

In the street stock feature, Rick Weaver passed outside polesitter Michael Goodwin for the point on the sixth circuit and paced the field over the remaining distance for his first triumph of the season at Trail-Way. However, Weaver had to hold off Jeremy Stremmel by less than a car-length to claim the victory in the race which ended at 12:32 a.m. Larry Landis took third while Bill Foster placed fourth and Dan Furman placed fifth.

Weaver and Furman claimed heat triumphs for the 20 street stocks competing.

The speedway will celebrate Sign Night next Friday night (8/9), during which fans may bring signs to the track for the opportunity to win prizes. The car divisions competing will be the 358 sprints, 600cc micro sprints, street stocks and limited stocks.

Trail-Way participates in the opening round of the annual 358 Lincoln/Trail-Way Shootout the next Friday night (8/16) in a 7:30 p.m. program.
