When Ian Madsen and Bret Nehring began putting their KCP Racing team together over the winter, their goal was to go after the Knoxville 410 Cup, and though they came up just short, as a first year team they are pleased with how they did.
“Our goal was to go after the Knoxville Cup, and we did just that,” Madsen said. “We led it at times, and had a shot on the last night, but a little bad luck earlier in the year hurt us, but we are proud of what we did as a first year team.”
With 32 cars on hand, Madsen timed his Nehring Construction/Team Kline Electric/Aspen Air Inc. entry in 11th quickest, putting him in the second heat.
Lining up third in his heat, Madsen slipped back to the fourth spot at the checkered, transferring him to the feature event lining up in the fifth row.
In the feature, Madsen had some issues, as he fought a flat tire. Opting to stay on the track, Madsen had his hands full with his Logan Contractors Supply/Royal Flooring/Greenland Homes of Iowa entry, and looked to hang on to a top 10 finish.
When the checkered flag waived on the 2013 Knoxville Raceway season, Madsen crossed the stripe seventh, and solidified himself second in the points.
“We struggled a bit in the feature with a tire, but hung on, and at least kept second,” he said. “I have to congratulate Bronson Maeschen and his team on a great year.”
Sunday night, Madsen and his team made the trip up to the Huset’s Speedway in Brandon, SD and had a nice night.
Timing in third fastest, the St. Mary’s, NSW driver lined up for the feature in the eighth spot.
When the race got underway, Madsen showed that he had a fast car, as he quickly began weaving his way through traffic.
As laps clicked down, he found himself in the third spot, and chasing after the lead duo of cars.
As soon as he seemed to get within striking distance, the white flag waived, and no sooner than that, the race was over, and Madsen crossed the stripe in the third spot.
“We were really strong on Sunday night at Huset’s,” he explained. “I think if we could have had a late caution, we would have ended up with the trophy, but we will try again next weekend.”
