After an impressive four-night stretch that included three Quick Time awards, three top-5’s and four Top-10’s, the Nashville, Tenn. resident was crowned the overall DIRTcar Nationals Champion at Volusia Speedway Park to kick off the 2014 season.

“I told myself that I wanted to win one of the small gators,” said McMahan, referring to the unique trophies given out to race winners at the event. “I never dreamed we’d get down to Florida and pick up the overall points championship for the sprint cars. That meant we got to take home the biggest gator of them all. It’s a real testament to Barry, Shane and Scott’s preparation all winter long. We qualified really well and that’s because they give me an awesome car, each and every night. For the majority of my racing career, I’ve had to qualify my way into races so I’ve become really good at discovering the quickest line around the track. It was awesome to be the fastest qualifier three of the four nights.”

From the moment the Barry Jackson led team unloaded at the half mile in near Barberville, FL, the #51 Bairs Tree Service/Nyce, Crete & Landis Block & Concrete/All Star Performance sprinter was a forced to be reckoned with.

During their 2014 lid lifter, McMahan and the CJB team laid down the fastest lap in time trials before finishing second to Joey Saldana in an event sanctioned by the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions.

The following three nights of racing action continued the standard of success established on night one.

“We really kept the momentum rolling all weekend long,” said McMahan. “On the second night, we had an awesome race with Brad Sweet and came up just a bit short for the win. Night number three was solid with a fourth place finish. Our worst night was the last one when we finished seventh and that was because of a late race double file restart. I lost some positions and couldn’t get them back. Regardless though, we came out of Florida tied for the (World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series) points lead with Daryn Pittman. We aren’t in a hole leaving Florida, which is huge.”

With a very successful start to the season in the books, McMahan and the CJB Motorsports team will head west for more than a month and a half of racing, beginning with the FVP Outlaw Showdown at the Dirt Track at Las Vegas on March 5th and 6th.

“We struggled out at Vegas last year,” said McMahan. “It’s a tricky track because you never know quite what you’re going to get as far as track conditions go. Hopefully, we’ll have a great run which will set us up for the first west coast swing. I love going out to California because it’s where I’m from, I have a lot of friends out there and many of the tracks that the Outlaws race at are tracks I grew up racing on.”
