Tampa, FL — (February 24, 2014) — The results weren’t indicative of Josh Baughman’s success during the 38th annual Winter Nationals last weekend at East Bay Raceway Park.

“We made a lot of good, fast laps,” he said. “We were working on being consistent on our lap times. Obviously we’re there to race, but as a team we’re racing ourselves.”

Baughman’s objective for his first event driving for Jason Johnson Racing was to improve throughout the weekend and find consistency.

“I think all in all for the entire weekend we had a pretty good weekend,” he said. “Our lap times were good. We’ve just got to get more consistent. We went down there with no expectations and just to learn a lot. I think we got that accomplished.”

While Baughman made gains throughout the Winter Nationals, he struggled to find luck. Baughman started on the inside of the second row during his heat race on both Thursday and Friday. Each day favored the outside lane and Baughman finished fourth to send him to a B Main.

He finished seventh in the consolation on Thursday and was caught up in a crash on the opening lap of a B Main on Friday.

“I thought I was going to hit the wall head on and flip over the fence,” he said. “It tore a lot of stuff up. We basically rebuilt the whole rear of the car and it did bend the chassis a little bit.”

Baughman endured a mechanical issue to start his heat race during Saturday’s finale, which buried him in a B Main on the heavy track.

The team experimented with an extremely tight race car and Baughman picked up a pair of positions on the challenging track to place ninth in the consolation race.

“All in all, we learned a lot,” he said. “We learned what we can do and what we can’t do with the car and my driving styles. I think going into the next race me and (crew chief) Wayne Priddy have a better understanding of each other.”

Baughman will return to action March 14 at Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont, Texas, and March 15 at Royal Purple Raceway in Baytown, Texas, with the ASCS Gulf South Region.
