Beaumont, TX — (March 16, 2014) — Tony Bruce Jr. recorded his first top-10 finish of the season after his night started in flames last Friday.

Competing at the ASCS Gulf South Region season-opening race at Golden Triangle Raceway Park, Bruce Jr. opened the night by ending his heat race early.

“We had an oil leak in the heat race,” he said. “I saw some flames coming out from the headers. To be safe I just pulled in and unfortunately had a DNF. That put us in the back all night long.”

Bruce Jr. was relegated to the fifth row of a B Main, which only transferred the top three to the main event.

“It was wet and hard to pass,” he said. “It stayed heavy all night long. We had a really good start. The bottom was still a little bit greasy and a lot of guys were running from the middle to the top. A few laps into the race some of the grease wore off and I was able to get some bite off the bottom.”

Bruce Jr. charged from ninth to a runner-up result, which earned him a transfer to the feature. He then started 17th in the main event.

“It was really tough to pass,” he said. “The bottom of the race track finally came in and pretty much everybody was right around the bottom. It was hard to get around somebody even if you had a great run on the outside. We were able to slowly work our way through the field.”

Bruce Jr. maneuvered to a ninth-place finish, which tied him for the most cars passed in the feature.

“Obviously whenever we go to regional races we expect a top three or a win,” he said. “Given the circumstances on Friday, a top 10 was a solid result.”

The ASCS Gulf South Region race at Royal Purple Raceway in Baytown, Texas, on Saturday was cancelled because of rain.

Bruce Jr. will return to action this Friday and Saturday at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
