Abbottstown, PA — (April 5, 2014) — New Oxford’s Jim Siegel started on the pole and led them all in picking up his tenth career Lincoln win in the 25-lap “410” sprint car feature Saturday night.
“The track was super-fast and hard to pass on tonight, said Siegel upon exiting his Mason-Dixon Vault Company #59 in victory lane, “It was a good night to have a little luck and draw a good number for the heat race. Of course, we’ve had bad luck all year and started up front. That was definitely the difference. There wasn’t much passing.”
Actually, there was, but Siegel never saw it.
Cory Haas came from seventh starting spot to actually challenge Siegel in lapped traffic after passing outside front row starter Tim Wagaman on the 17th lap. And third-place finisher Brian Montieth lived on the edge all night and came from 18th starting spot.
“I don’t know where Cory started. I thought I heard him a couple times, I wasn’t really sure,” said Siegel after becoming the third different winner in as many races in the Pigeon Hills this season, “I was trying to take my time with lapped cars, because we tore this thing up on opening day and I don’t want to go through that again. This is the only car we have.”
The last 16 laps went non-stop, with the leaders dicing through the field.
“I knew they (lapped cars) were holding me up, so I thought ‘It’s time to sit up in the seat and go.’ The car was a lot faster than what I was pushing it, but when the track’s like this and there’s not much passing, you have to just make it wide and go as fast as you need to, and that’s what I tried to do.”
Wagaman hung on for fourth, with 15th-starting Danny Dietrich coming home fifth. Sixth through tenth were Steve Owings, Robbie Kendall, Glenndon Forsythe, Mike Bittinger, and 21st-starting Billy Dietrich.
When asked about the early-race challenges of rookie 410 racer Tim Wagaman, Siegel pointed out the abundance of young talent now racing weekly at Lincoln.
“There’s a lot of new faces this year, and it’s going to make it tough until you learn everyone’s tendencies,” said Siegel, “There are a lot of talented young guys out here, and it’s going to be tough here by the end of the year.”
Heats for the 29 410 sprinters were won by Ryan Wilson, Derek Sell, and Siegel, with Freddie Rahmer winning the consolation.
Mechanicsburg’s Kevin Nouse prevailed in a late-race battle with Chase Dietz to score the win in the 20-lap “358” sprint car feature. Nouse started seventh and grabbed the runner-up spot from polesitter and early-race leader Tyler Esh on lap 10. From there, he tracked down fourth-starting Dietz, who had taken the lead from Esh on lap five.
Nouse was on Dietz’s back bumper as the two navigated through lapped traffic with two laps to go. That’s when disaster nearly struck for both leaders, with Dietz getting crossed up by a lapped car in turn four and both cars bouncing off each other exiting the turn. Nouse nipped Dietz at the line with the white flag waving, and held on for his third career Lincoln win.
Dietz settled for second, with opening day winner Niki Young coming from eighth to cross third. Competing the top five were Esh and Matt Campbell. Rounding out the top ten were Duane Watson, Zach Eucalano, Brie Hershey, Chandler Leiby, and Jay Galloway.
Heats for the 19 358 sprinters were won by Watson and Nouse.
Westminster, Maryland’s Scott Jorda claimed his first career win in the 20-lap All-American Outlaw feature event, after finding himself the leader on an 18th-lap incident involving leader Randy Doty and second-place Hunter Nester.
Nester got into the back of race-long leader Doty in turn four, resulting in a Doty spin and a roughriding call against Nester, sending him to the rear.
Jorda led the final three laps, holding off Justin Cullum for the win. Third through fifth were Al Daniels, Jim Minter, and Doty.
Heats for the 20 All American Outlaws were won by Doty and Bryan Green, who pulled into the infield just before the start of the feature event.
Next Saturday, April 12th, it’ll be ARCH NIGHT in the Pigeon Hills, featuring the 410 Sprints, Super Sportsman, and 358 Late Models. As part of ARCH’s “Cars and Guitars Tour,” the rock band “Seventh Tower” will perform in a special concert in the infield from 5:00-5:45 p.m. Gates open at 5:00, with the first green flag scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
