ROUSE, STYRES, TURKEY, BAILEY, ROTHWELL, & DEBOER TAKE WINS ON STRICKLAND’S GMC NIGHT

by Tommy Goudge

(June 27, 2014) –  139 drivers signed in to race on Strickland’s GMC “Sportsman Shootout” night at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday night. Brad Rouse, Glenn Styres, Aaron Turkey, Dave Bailey, Kyle Rothwell, and Joe DeBoer were the feature winners on another busy night at the track.

DIRTcar SPORTSMAN MODIFIEDS
Chris Bellamy started on the front row of the DIRTcar Sportsman feature along with Cody McPherson, and Bellamy took the lead and held it until lap 9, when McPherson got by. Gary Lindberg moved quickly through the field, but spun out with 5 laps to go, allowing Brad Rouse to restart behind McPherson.

McPherson had trouble getting through turn two, and Rouse pounced on the opportunity to take the lead on lap 24. Rouse took the win, followed by McPherson, BJ Willard, 17th starter Kevin Sharpe, and Charlie Lynch.

Heat races for the 24 car field were claimed by Cody McPherson, Gary Lindberg, and Brad Rouse.

CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING 360 SPRINT CARS
Steve Poirier and Chris Steele started the 360 Sprint Car feature on the front row, and Poirier took the early lead, with Steele close behind. Glenn Styres made his way to third by lap 7, and went to work catching the two drivers at the front of the field.

Steele went after Poirier and actually led lap 9 before Poirier passed him back. Steele spun two laps later, and Styres took advantage of the restart to make the winning move. He cruised to the feature win, followed by Poirier, Kyle Patrick, Todd Hoddick, and Jason Barney.

Heat races for the 22 car field were claimed by Glenn Styres, Kyle Patrick, and Todd Hoddick, while Havard Daniels won the B-Main.

STRICKLAND’S GMC CRATE SPRINT CARS
Kyle Durnin and Robbie General started the Crate Sprint Car feature at the front, but the race was red-flagged before the first lap was completed as Brad Herron and Robbie General went for wild rides in turn 4. Both were uninjured, but their cars suffered extensive damage.

Aaron Turkey took the lead when the race restarted, and survived a trip off the outside of turn four to hold off Ryan Hunsinger and win for the second week in a row. Jake Brown made a late charge, but had to settle for the runner-up spot, followed by Hunsinger, Czuba, and Josh Shantz.

Heat races for the 11 car field were claimed by Mark Czuba and Mike Thorne.

AFFORDABLE TOWING & RECOVERY THUNDER STOCKS
Tony Fraser and Jonny Lowenberg made up the front row for the Thunder Stock feature, but Melissa Miller got by both of them to lead the first lap. Miller gave way to 14th starter Dave Bailey by the time two laps were complete, while defending champ Lee Winger was also on the move, along with Billy Bleich, Jr., Dave Silverthorn, Jr., Ryan Dinning, and Chris Dickie.

Winger got by Bailey with 6 laps left, but Bailey didn’t give up. Bailey did all he could to get the lead back, but Winger held off his advances and crossed the line first, only to find that his car did not meet the minimum weight requirement during post-race technical inspection. Bailey was awarded the win, followed by Silverthorn, Dickie, Bryce Richardson, and Bleich.

Heat races for the 34 car field were claimed by Jonny Lowenberg, Jim Lampman, Dave Bailey, and Lee Winger, while Karl Sault won the B-Main.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
Jade Pelletier and Kathi Dickie began the Mini Stock feature on the front row, but the race was barely underway when a melee exiting turn four brought out the yellow flag. Several familiar faces made their way to the front of the pack when the race restarted, along with a pair of drivers making their first Ohsweken start of the season, as Alex Schuts, Tyler Lafantaisie, and Mark Bazuin were joined by Kyle Rothwell and Jason Coutu.

Schuts eventually suffered a flat tire and crashed in turn one, while Kyle Rothwell used a last-lap restart to get by Coutu and take the feature win. Coutu settled for the runner-up spot, followed by Bazuin, Lafantaisie, and Lee Hils.

Heat races for the 30 car field were claimed by Kathi Dickie, Chris Ryckman, Mark Bazuin, and Kyle Rothwell, while Matt Nuell won the B-Main.

GALE’S AUTO AFTERMARKET BOMBERS
Tim Nuell and Gillian Hils were on the front row for what turned out to be a rough and tumble Bomber feature. Joe DeBoer eventually made his way to the front of the pack, with Max Chechalk close behind.

Joe DeBoer negotiated traffic well enough to bring home his second win of the season, while Dusty DeBoer got around Chechalk for the runner-up spot. Chechalk settled for third, followed by Ashton Reekie and Gillian Hils.

Heat races for the 18 car field were claimed by Clinton Nicholls and Joe DeBoer, while Paul Longboat won the B-Main..
