Lawrenceburg and Millstream up next for BOSS

From Aaron Fry

Now in it’s fifth season of promoting races, the Mo Vaughn Transport – Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series has run many doubleheader weekends. The 2 day events sometimes tests drivers and teams who have had a rough time on the first night. A bad weekend could spell disaster in a teams championship hopes.

This weekend will mark the first time in history that the touring band of racers will run 3 events in 3 days. Making the grind extra difficult is the fact that some June rainouts were rescheduled for last weekend, in effect making it a 5 race in 10 days run for the BOSS regulars. In the heat of the summer, this weekend alone could make or break a teams title hopes. The driver and crew who keeps their composure and puts in three consistent runs could take a huge leap toward become the 2015 champion.

Friday night’s event is one of the larger events on the tour when BOSS competes during day #1 of the 2 day “Open Wheel Championships” at Atomic Speedway. In some ways this is a homecoming for BOSS who sanctioned their very first race at this facility in July of 2011 when it was known as K-C Raceway. California driver Justin Grant scored the win that day. This will be the first time that the series has returned to the high banked 3/8 mile oval since. Many of the same drivers in that first race will once again be fielding cars in this event. Last years non wing portion of the Open Wheel Championship was not sanctioned but the cars on hand put on a great show with Rocklin, California driver Robert Ballou scoring the win. With the last 2 non wing events taken by Californians, the BOSS series will be bringing in drivers from 5 states of their own in an effort to stop the trend.

A pre-race pit party with live music and a corn hole tournament will kick things off on Thursday night at Atomic at 6 pm. Teams arriving on Thursday will be able to take advantage of early pit parking. On Friday, pit gates will open at 2 pm. Drivers meeting will be at 5:30 pm with hot laps at 6 pm and racing at 7. General admission for Friday’s event is $22 and pit passes will be $35. This event will see an increased purse throughout the field. No mufflers are required. Fuel will be available at the track. The official hotel is the Ameristay in Waverly, Ohio where rooms are $73.10 plus tax when you ask for the BOSS Racer’s Rate. The hotel phone number is 740-941-4678.

On Saturday, the series heads across the border for one very meaningful night on the high banks of Lawrenceburg Speedway in Indiana. This will be the second annual “Jason Soudrette Memorial”. Soudrette was one of the original outlaws of the tour who ran that very first race at K-C Raceway (now Atomic) in 2011. Soudrette was instrumental in getting publicity for the series early on. While being interviewed for an internet / TV show, Soudrette insisted on talking about the new BOSS series even when the interviewer tried to change the subject. Memories of Jason Soudrette have remained near and dear to the BOSS series and we are proud to have this race in his honor.

On Saturday at Lawrenceburg, pit gates will open at 4 pm with general admission gates opening at 5 pm. Drivers meeting will be at 5:30 with hot laps at 6 pm and racing at 7 pm. General admission in $15 with pit pass prices at $30. Fuel will be available for sale at the track and mufflers or muffler inserts are required. The official hotel for Saturday night is the Super 8 Motel in Middletown, Ohio north of Cincinnati. The rate is $53.10 plus tax when you ask for the BOSS Racer’s Rate. The hotel’s phone number is 513-422-4888.

Finally, on Sunday, another highly anticipated event will see the tour roll into the historic Millstream Speedway in Findlay, Ohio for the first time ever. Randy and Lisa Hammer have done a great job bringing this facility back to life and the track should make a great environment for the “back em in” style of non wing sprint car racing.

The action will begin early on Sunday with gates opening at 3 pm. An autograph session is set for 4 pm. The driver’s meeting will be at 5 with hot laps at 5:30 and racing action at 6:30. The 3 division program will see the BOSS cars running first in order to get teams and fans on the road early. General admission will be $20 with pit passes $30. No fuel will be available at the race track. Mufflers or muffler inserts are required at Millstream.

Teams are reminded that heat race and bonus money will be up for grabs. However, you must have the proper decals on the car to be eligible for these extra prizes. The decals are available at sign in. Special thank to heat race sponsors: Moose Racing, Hoosier, American Racer, Buckeye Machine and FAST Signs. Bonus awards are presented by The Bridge Restaurant, Lynn Cook, Hochstetler Truck and Auto Repair, Apple Metal Polishing, A Plus Automatic Transmission and Cowen Truck Lines.

Fans are reminded to pick up a scorecard / program for $1 for a chance to play the Mo Vaughn “Pick ’em” contest. This is the former major league baseball superstar for the Boston Red Sox who now sponsors the tour. If you pick the top 3 main event finishers in order, you win $25 cash!
