– WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Sept. 1, 2015) – Johnny Herrera captured an emotional triumph last Friday at Red River Speedway.

Herrera led the distance of the ASCS Red River Region event to earn his first feature victory since his father’s passing last month.

“It was a good one,” he said. “After all the stuff that’s happened the last month it was good to get that. I got my head cleared better and my mindset freshened. Just to get that and to continue in the direction my dad would want me to go, there’s still a grieving process you have to go through, but it was a good feeling to get that done.”

Herrera opened the night by drawing a low number, which lined him up on the outside of the front row of a heat race. He won the heat to advance into the feature redraw, where he pulled the No. 1 to garner the pole position for the main event.

“That draw means everything,” he said. “I usually don’t draw good, but the whole night was a good draw. The pill draw was good for us and our car was good all night. We made subtle changes throughout the night to keep up with the race track.”

Herrera maintained the lead throughout the feature on the tricky track, which prompted slide jobs lap after lap.

“The track got slick to a cushion,” he said. “You had to make sure you passed them where you wanted to. There were some close calls in lapped traffic. You had to be on your toes going through lapped traffic and you couldn’t hesitate or else second place would be all over you.”

The win was Herrera’s sixth this season and his third with the ASCS Red River Region, which had an event last Saturday at Abilene Speedway in Abilene, Texas, rained out.

Herrera is scheduled to race this Friday at Flint Creek Speedway in West Siloam Springs, Okla., with the ASCS Red River Region and Saturday and Sunday at Randolph County Raceway in Moberly, Mo., with the ASCS Warrior Region.
