Sheldon Haudenschild wins the Attica Ambush

Attica, OH — (Septemmber 5, 2015) — There’s no disputing the fact Sheldon Haudenschild is having a break-out season in 2015. The 22-year-old Wooster, Ohio driver would close out Attica Raceway Park’s 2015 season Saturday by dominating the last 30 laps of the University of Northwestern Ohio All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Car feature to record his fourth series win of the year on All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads Night.

Haudenschild, who finished second at Attica the previous night, would battle with four time All Star champion Tim Shaffer early. However, Shaffer would make contact with Jacobs while battling for the lead on lap three and his right rear tire would begin losing air, culminating in him stopping on lap 11. That would hand the lead to Haudenschild who would drive away for his fifth career series win. It was Haudenschild’s second ever win at Attica and came on the 108th appearance of the All Stars at the track.

“We have the dream team with Bonzai (Bruns) and Zach (Ames)….ever since we all go together this car has been unbelievable. I can’t thank my mom and dad enough for everything they do for me. They’ve done this for me for six years and I hope we are turning some heads so they don’t have to do for a seventh. I wouldn’t be here without Southern Pacific Farms,” said Haudenschild.

“I had a pretty good race going there with Shaff (Tim Shaffer) before he got a flat tire. The car was awesome and I could maneuver around, even when the track took rubber. I got to the lapped cars and just had to take my time,” added Haudenschild of his Triple X machine.

Alvada, Ohio’s Chad Kemenah would finish second, a small victory for his Rob Hunter owned team.

“We’ve been terrible lately. My brother (Brian) threw everything at this…about the only thing we didn’t change was turning the top wing around and I was even for that! It seems like we get going and then take two steps back. Hopefully we’re turning this thing around. I can’t thank Rob and Rita Hunter enough for giving me the opportunity to do this. I want to wish their daughter a happy 16th birthday,” said Kemenah beside his Brilex LLC, Seneca Energy, Nighthawk Holdings, Kistler Racing Products backed #10H.

Friday night’s winner Cody Darrah would run third most of the race, then fell back to fourth but got back around Chris Andrews late to round out the podium.

“I about spun out three or four times in front of the field. I guess I was just pushing myself a little too hard. But, we salvaged a third and a great weekend and learned a lot. It was just very nice having my family all here,” said Darrah of his J&K Salvage, Eichelberger’s U-Pull0It, J&K Automotive, Factory Kahne Shocks backed #89.

Ryan Markham would take the lead on lap three of the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Model feature and picked up his third win of the year at Attica. It wasn’t easy though, as he bobbled on the turn four cushion on lap 12 and nearly lost the lead. But, the Ashland, Ohio driver would gather his composure and take his 7th career Attica victory.

“We ran a harder tire and I haven’t done that much this year and it was doing some goofy things to me. I was just being cautious…I could run the car a little harder than I did but I didn’t to run it off the edge or do something stupid. The two races prior to this we ran second and probably should have won one of those. It’s been a good year…our finishes have been strong all year. Hate to see the season coming to an end. I have to thank all the fans, my wife, and Cory and Jessica and Lou Bemiller…he’s been helping me out,” said Markham beside his Cool It Thermo Tech, H&T Demolition, Lias Tire, Accu-Force, Fultz Fabrication, Innovative Graphics backed #5m.

When race long leader D.J. Foos would see his engine detonate with five laps to go, Dustin Stroup was there to capitalize in the Foster Auto Body 305 Sprint feature. Stroup would drive away the final five laps for his second consecutive win.

“DJ had that race won. I had nothing for him. I started smelling something and I saw smoke coming out of his car and I thought ‘well this is ours.’ I have to give my guys credit…my dad and Reid. My crew chief actually went camping this weekend. I told him ‘what the heck I get a win and you go camping and not going to come back?’ We still got the job done. I can’t thank Kenny Meggit enough for giving us an engine to run,” said Stroup beside his Westway Farms, Meggit Farms, Sherry at Gabel and Associates Realty, Daniel A. Miller Cement Finishing, Slade Shock Technology backed #10x.

Former dirt truck track champion Brian Arnold of Tiffin would take the lead on lap 8 of the 15 lap Fremont Fence Dirt Truck feature and would drive to his first win of the season. It was the 10th of his career and puts him into a tie for third on the track’s all-time win list for the division.

“The truck worked really, really good tonight. I was getting some better runs on the outside and that’s not typically how I race but it worked out well tonight,” said Arnold.

For the 40 lap All Star feature Lee Jacobs and Shaffer would pace the field and the duo along with fourth starter Chris Andrews would battle for the lead the first two laps with Kemenah, Darrah, Sheldon Haudenschild and Dean Jacobs in tow. Shaffer would take the lead on lap three as he and Jacobs made contact on the front stretch. Andrews would grab second a lap later with Haudenschild moving into third on lap five. Shaffer pulled away slightly as Andrews and Haudenschild battled for second with Kemenah, Lee Jacobs, Dean Jacobs and Darrah in tow.

Haudenschild would take second on lap eight while Andrews no had his hands full with Kemenah. Haudenschild quickly closed on Shaffer and as they prepared to race into heavy lapped traffic on lap 11, Shaffer would slide off the high side of turn two as his tire went down. It would be the only caution of the race.

On the restart Haudenschild would blast away at the high side with Kemenah in second while Darrah got a tremendous restart and vaulted from sixth to third. Darrah would run off the back stretch a lap later and lost ground to Haudenschild and Kemenah. With 25 laps to go Haudenschild looked like he was on cruise control as he pulled away. Kemenah, Darrah, Andrews, Dean Jacobs, Cap Henry and Greg Wilson gave chase.

Haudenschild would encounter heavy lapped traffic at the half-way point but he patiently picked his way through to maintain his big advantage over Kemenah, Darrah, Dean Jacobs, Andrews, Henry, Wilson, Jac Haudenschild and Byron Reed. By lap 25 Darrah had closed on Kemenah and with 10 laps to go a tremendous battle was underway for the runner-up spot as Andrews and Dean Jacobs joined the fray. Haudenschild continued to maintain a comfortable advantage and Kemenah would clear traffic to pull away in second. Andrews would take third on lap 30 but slipped out of the rubber on lap 37 as Darrah would regain the spot.

At the checkers Haudenschild would win by about five car lengths over Kemenah, Darrah, Andrews and Henry. Dean Jacobs, Greg Wilson, Jac Haudenschild, Rob Chaney and Reed would round out the top 10.

Markham and Wayne Maffett Jr. (back a year to the day he suffered a life-threatening injury in a work related incident) would bring the field to green for the 25 lap late model feature. But a crash involving Jim Gingery and Dave Hornikel would necessitate another start. This time third starter Rick Bond would grab the lead over Markham, Ryan Missler, George Lee and Maffett. After a caution for debris with two laps in, Markham would drive into the lead with Bond and Missler challenging. Missler would take second on lap four.

Tim Sabo would bring out eh yellow with eight laps in and on the restart Maffett would spin. The race would stay green the remaining 17 laps.

Markham would pull away slightly from Missler as Mike Bores drove into third. Markham would bobble on the cushion on lap 12 but was able to maintain the lead over Missler, Bores, Bond, Randy Scott and Lee. Markham would drive into lapped traffic on lap 19 but Missler could not close as Bores, Scott, Bond, Lee and Larry Kingseed gave chase. Markham would cruise to the win over Missler, Bores, Scott and Bond.

In the 25 lap Foster’s Auto Body 305 Sprint feature Cody Gallogly and DJ Foos brought the field to green with Foos blasting into the lead over Gallogly, Stroup, Paul Weaver, Ricky Peterson and Tyler Street. One of the infield tires was shoved onto the track before two laps could be completed, bringing out the caution. On the restart Kelsey Ivy made contact with the restart cone for another yellow. On the ensuing restart Foos would pull away from Stroup, Gallogly, Weaver, Kyle Capodice, Peterson, Street, Brandon Moore and Jamie Miller. Weaver would take third on lap five.

Just as the leaders prepared to encounter heavy lapped traffic on lap seven, Daniel Demyan would spin. With a clear track, Foos would again pull away to a large advantage over Stroup, Weaver, Capodice, Peterson, Gallogly, Miller and John Ivy. By lap 13 Foos would drive into heavy lapped traffic but Stroup could not close as Weaver, Peterson, Miller, Capodice, Ivy and Bobby Clark tried to make up ground. With eight laps to go Weaver was challenging Stroup for second when smoke began to come from Foos’ machine.

Gallogly would make heavy contact with the turn four fence with five laps to go to bring out the red. Foos would then go to the pits, handing the lead to Stroup. Stroup would pull away from Weaver the final five circuits for his second career Attica win. Behind Weaver would be Peterson, Miller and Clark to round out the top five.

In the final event of the night – and season – Jeff Ward and Cory McCaughey would pace the field for the 15 lap dirt truck feature. The pair would race side by side for the led with Ward leading lap 1 and McCaughey lap 2. The only caution on lap 3 would see the running order of McCaughey, Ward, Arnold, Eric Devanna, Dana Fry and Keith Sorg. Arnold would drive into second on lap four and he and McCaughey would battle for the lead with Arnold leading lap six by a bumper and McCaughey leading lap 7.

Something would happen to McCaughey’s mount on lap eight as he slowed somewhat, giving Arnold the lead. Arnold would pull away for the win with McCaughey, Fry, Cory Ward and Jeff Ward rounding out the top five.

Attica Raceway Park would like to thank all the fans, race teams and marketing partners for a successful 2015 season that would see 19 events be contested with only four rain-outs.
