WAKEENEY, Kan. (April 12, 2016) – Zach Blurton cracked the win column for the first time this season last Sunday at WaKeeney Speedway to cap a successful weekend.

“We struggled the first few weeks of the season,” he said. “We changed quite a bit on the car and we’re finally getting it really dialed in. I think we can get faster yet with some things to improve on. I’ve never won this early in the season so hopefully this will lead into next weekend and really boost us. The car seems like every time we get on the track it gets faster and faster.”

Last weekend began on Saturday at Dodge City Raceway Park in Dodge City, Kan., where Blurton won a heat race after starting on the outside of the front row. That locked him into the feature redraw and after pulling the No. 6 he lined up on the outside of the third row for the main event.

“I had a really good start and got to fourth,” he said. “The two cars in front of me in second and third couldn’t get around a lapped car. I went to the bottom and moved by both. I caught up to C.J. Johnson as we were going through traffic. I came out of turn four one time and hit an infield tire. I thought it was going to knock the front end down. We lost a straightaway at the time, but quickly made it back up. We took the white flag and we were getting ready to catch two lapped cars. C.J. went to the bottom and I went to the top, but it didn’t work. Luke Cranston got by me and we settled for third.”

The third-place result was Blurton’s best finish of the season until Sunday’s URSS Kansas Region opener at WaKeeney Speedway. Blurton once again won his heat race after starting on the outside of the front row. This time he started the 25-lap feature fourth.

“The car to the inside of me didn’t take off really good,” he said. “The two guys in front of me both went to the top and I saw the bottom open. I about went by both of them. I was side by side with (Steven) Richardson for the lead down the back straightway and through turns three and four. The next time going into turn one I got by him and never looked back. C.J. was right there. I saw him on the outside probably 10 times. It was an awesome race.”

Blurton led the final 24 laps to secure his first win of the season.

He is slated to return to action this Friday at Southern Oklahoma Speedway in Ardmore, Okla., and Saturday at Longdale Speedway in Longdale, Okla., with the Sprint Series of Oklahoma and URSS National Series.
