– Spending his weekend competing with the National Sprint League, Kerry Madsen and his Keneric Racing team would have a great week that saw them win on Friday night at the Jackson Motorplex, finishing sixth at the Knoxville Raceway, and score a third place finish at the Hancock County Speedway.
“It was a great weekend for this race team,” Kerry Madsen said. “We had an awesome night on Friday in Jackson, MN and had two good runs at Knoxville and Hancock County.”
Checking in at the Jackson Motorplex on Friday night for the $20,000-to-win Barb Wieskus Classic, Madsen would make his presence be felt early in the night as he timed in second fastest in qualifying time trials.
Going form sixth to third in his heat race and the newly renovated ½ mile speedway, ‘The Mad Man’ would find himself in the sixth spot for the 25-lap feature event.
From his third row starting position, the St. Marys, NSW native would slowly work his way forward as he admittedly struggled in the early stages of the race. As the race got into a long green flag run, Madsen would come alive as he worked his way up into the third spot just past the race’s halfway point.
The 17th lap would see Madsen make a big time move on Brian Brown to take over the second spot, and he then set his sights on race leader, Aaron Reutzel. On the 19th lap Madsen would make his move as he got by Reutzel to take over the race lead with just six laps to go.
Not to be denied on this night, Madsen would lead the final six markers to claim his ninth win overall in 2016.
Following the NSL to the Knoxville Raceway for one final appearance before Nationals week, Madsen would time the Keneric Healthcare/Keneric Racing/American Racing Custom Wheels No. 29 machine in sixth quickest in time trials.
Finishing fourth in his heat, Madsen would move into the 25-lap feature event where he would grid the field from the eighth starting position. The past fast paced feature event would see Madsen work his way up a few spots during the duration of the feature, as he would finish in the sixth.
Sunday night would bring the curtain down on a busy three-day weekend of racing, and Madsen would qualify sixth fastest at the Hancock County Speedway.
Making a couple of power moves during his heat race, the Australian National Champion would pick up the win and find himself on the front row of the feature event.
With the track extremely slick and on the verge of taking rubber around the bottom of the speedway, Madsen would fall back to the third spot when things got going as he battled with his brother, Ian.
Much of the race featured the field fighting for real estate around the bottom of the speedway, and passing was at a premium on this night. Sticking his nose under his younger sibling on a couple of occasions, Madsen would close a strong weekend out with a third place finish.
“We have a great car right now, and it is great to be heading into Ironman and the Nationals with a full head of steam,” Madsen said. “These guys work hard, and Bob and Pete Gavranich make sure we have the tools we need to succeed.”
