Foos and Ivy Win at Fremont Speedway

FREMONT, Ohio (August 5, 2017) — D.J. Foos used a restart with six laps to go to drive around race-long leader Tyler Gunn to record his first ever Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprint win at Fremont Speedway on Kear’s Speed Shop Night, Saturday, Aug. 5.

Foos’ 10th career Fremont win – 9 coming in the 305 sprint division – adds to his lead in the All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads FAST 410 Championship Series presented by Ohio Logistics.

“The restart before that (with 10 laps to go) I kind of messed around. I tried to run the middle and kind of pinch him down and that didn’t work. I was told on the back stretch not to do that again so I had to try something a little different. Man it paid off. Daniel Smith and Jay Kiser had this thing rolling. Start of the year we qualified pretty well but faded in the features. Everything is finally coming around. We have speed every where we go. We just need to maintain and win this FAST deal,” said Foos beside his Jet Express, Crown Battery, Kistler Racing Products, Kistler Engines, JLH General Contractor, NAPA of Bryan; Shelluke’s Bar and Grill backed #23.

Fremont’s John Ivy led all 25 laps to score his third win of the year in the Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprints. Ivy moved into fifth on the track’s all-time win list with his 55th career Fremont victory. Ivy is only three wins away from tying Jim Linder for fourth on the all-time win list. It wasn’t an easy task for Ivy as he battled a rib injury he sustained recently racing go-karts.

“My ribs are killing me. I went go-kart racing a few weeks ago and broke a rib. Man this thing was good. Guy and my brother and Darren and everybody…we got something figured out with this thing. The car felt better after that restart (with 12 laps to go),” said Ivy of his CN Construction Supplies; Ginnever Trucking; Sonny’s Machine & Welding; Kistler Racing Products; Rohr Lawn Care; Mr. Appliance; MRE; Sipes Oceola Garage; Dave Story Equipment; L&R Farms; S&S Racing: Kercher Engines; Linder’s Speed Equipment; Tiffany’s Furniture; Seagate Sandblasting; Keller Hardware; Johnson Hunting & Fishing backed machine.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I’d win this many races here. I remember sitting in the stands watching my brother run street stocks. I said I was going to do that and of course all my buddies would laugh at me. But I’ve been doing it and hopefully we aren’t done,” Ivy added in the Engine Pro Victory Lane.

Delta, Ohio’s Ky Harper dominated the McCullough Industries 602 late model feature, leading all 15 laps for his fourth victory of the season. Harper now has 13 career wins at “The Track That Action Built.”

“Feels like we haven’t been here (victory lane) in awhile. We have been busting our butts on this car and haven’t been able to figure it out. I think we found something. I hate the bottom, but Jimmy told me you’d better be on the bottom or when you come in just keep walking. So we stuck it down there and got the win,” said Harper beside his B&R Powdercoating; H&H Environmental; Twist-T-Freeze; Gibraltar Excavating; VA Risk Services; AM Transport; Track Side Truck & Trailer Repair; Childress Collision; Warpaint Graphics; Mastersbuilt Race Cars #34.

Fostoria, Ohio’s Shawn Valenti took the lead on lap six of the Burmeister Trophy Dirt Truck feature and pulled away for his sixth win of the season. Valenti won by over seven seconds for his 38th career Fremont win, placing him 11th on the track’s all-time win list.

“Last week lit the wick on this thing. You try to be Mr. nice guy week in and week out and you get raced that way. Hats off to the team and it’s great to be back,” said Valenti beside his A Plus Auto Center; Best Performance; Craig Miller Trucking; Dave Story Equipment; Real Geese Decoys backed #7B.

Byron Reed and Tyler Gunn brought the field to green for the 30-lap 410 sprint feature with Gunn gaining the advantage over Reed, Foos, Stuart Brubaker and Broc Martin. Gunn began to edge away as Foos took second on lap six bringing Martin to third before the caution flew for an Austin Nemire spin on lap eight. On the ensuing restart Martin and Reed got together battling for third, sending both to the tail.

Gunn again began to drive away as Foos battled with Brubaker for second with Brian Lay, Todd Heller, Chris Andrews and Duane Zablocki in tow. Foos began to close on Gunn and as they raced into lapped traffic just before the half-way point was ducking under the leader to challenge. The pair ran nose to tail through traffic until Chris Andrews took a tumble with 10 laps to go. Gunn got an excellent restart to pull away from Foos with Brubaker, Heller, Zablocki, Heller, Brian Smith, Trey Jacobs and Justin Peck giving chase.

With six laps to go Reed spun, wiping out a three car length lead for Gunn. When the green flew Foos drove around Gunn to take the lead. Gunn didn’t give up and stayed glued to Foos’ rear bumper waiting for a mistake. Foos stayed perfect the final six laps to score the win with Gunn, Brubaker, Heller and Jacobs (up from 16th) rounding out the top five.

In the 25-lap 305 sprint feature John Ivy and Jamie Miller paced the field with Ivy grabbing the lead at the drop of the green. Ivy quickly pulled away while Nate Dussel and Miller battled for second. Ivy built a sizeable lead when the caution flew with 12 laps to go. On the restart Ivy again pulled away with Dussel holding off Steve Rando and Kyle Capodice. The car on the move was Paul Weaver who had driven from 20th to fifth.

With a clear track Ivy would go unchallenged to the checkers with Rando getting by Dussel on the last lap for second with Weaver and Capodice rounding out the top five.

Harper and Kyle Dukeshire brought the field to green for the 15 lap late model feature but a Jamie Miller spin necessitated a complete restart. When the green flew so did Harper, driving away from a great second place battle between John Brooks and Chester Fitch. Back-to-back cautions on laps seven and eight were the only thing slowing Harper down. Harper drove away the final half of the race for the win over Brooks, Fitch, Brad Mitten and Skeeter Fitch.

Pole-sitter Noah Wagner grabbed the lead in the 20-lap dirt truck feature over Jim Holcomb. Wagner would spin after a lap was complete, handing the lead to Holcomb. A caution for debris after two laps were scored kept the field close with Holcomb leading Brad Stuckey, Valenti, Brad Mitten and Kent Brewer. Following a lap four restart for a Daniel Roepke spin, Holcomb had his hands full with Stuckey and Valenti.

While most of the field was glued to the bottom, Valenti went to the cushion and drove into the lea don lap six and steadily pulled away. The race for second was very entertaining with Holcomb, Stuckey, Mitten, Brewer, Keith Sorg and Dustin Keegan running nose to tail and side by side lap after lap. With five laps to go Valenti held a five second lead over Sorg, Holcomb, Mitten, Brewer and Stuckey.

When the checkers flew Valenti had a half track advantage with Sorg, Holcomb, Mitten and Stuckey rounding out the top five.

Fremont Speedway will be back in action on Tuesday, Aug. 22 to kick off the Sandusky County Fair. The Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprints will battle for a big purse thanks to Joe and Fran Darmofal and the Pub 400. There will also be a ladies truck powder puff race.
