TULSA, Okla. (June 27, 2011) – Wingless Sprint Cars take center stage at Tucson’s USA Raceway as the Sunoco Fuel ASCS Canyon Region takes to the 3/8-mile clay oval for two full nights of action on Saturday and Sunday.
The ASCS Canyon Region takes to the Tucson oval on Saturday night for the first time since the Memorial Day Weekend Salute to Indy double and then makes it two nights in a row with Sunday night’s Firecracker 40.
While two-time ASCS Canyon Region champion Jeremy Sherman leads the title chase entering the weekend, it’s R.J. Johnson with the hot hand as he tries to extend his two-race winning streak.
Johnson, who split last year’s Fourth of July weekend double with reigning series champion Charles Davis, Jr., topped the May 29 Salute to Indy event and then made it two in a row with a June 111 score at Canyon Speedway Park.
Johnson enters the weekend with three overall wins on the season, one shy of Sherman’s four triumphs and one up on Josh Pelkey’s two wins.
Sherman currently holds a 98-point edge over Davis, Jr., with no finish lower than fourth in nine feature events thus far. “Chargin’ Charles” is 45 points ahead of Johnson, with Pelkey and Ronnie Clark rounding out the current top five in points.
The balance of the current top ten includes Andrew Reinbold, Bruce St. James, Dalten Gabbard, Matt Rossi and Mike Martin, with the likes of Justin Quinn, Ryan Linder and Brian Hosford among those just outside the top ten looking in.
Racing action gets under way at 6:45 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday at USA Raceway.
The 3/8-mile USA Raceway clay oval is located east of Tucson off I-10 Exit 268, then 1.6 mile south on Craycroft Road, which turns into Los Reales. For more information, contact the track at 520-574-8515.
