JOHN CARROLL CLASSIC WINNERS AT SKAGIT SPEEDWAY

From Kelly Hart

Alger, WA — (May 25, 2013) — Memorial Weekend racing at Skagit Speedway featured five divisions before a packed house and full-moon sky. At times the old adage about racing on a full moon seemed to be true. Annually the John Carroll Classic presented by Industrial Resources Inc. produces some of the best racing of the season as racers treasure the Classic Trophies and prestige of winning a race named after one of the tracks legendary racers.

There were twenty five 360 Sprint cars ready to race bringing a B Main into play. The “Hooligan” as B Mains are sometimes called proved to be the only Main event to go completely caution free with Reece Goetz leading the last six laps of the ten lap race to move into the A Main along with fellow top 3 finishers Tyler Anderson and Jeff Dunlap. Goetz parlayed that B Main win into both Hard Charger status for the night as well as a top 3 finish on the final. The A Main was a hard fought affair that took its toll on competitors. After Trey Starks took the lead from Jason Solwold on lap six he was off to the races. Starks sliced and diced his way through traffic pulling away at times while the rest of the field was having the race of a lifetime. There were position battles all over the track and the race was looking good to go green-to-checkered when disaster occurred on the 18th lap. Mitch Olson tangled with a slowing car, ending with Olson going over in one of those twisting, snap rolling wrecks that brought out the first of 3 red flags in a row. On the next restart Travis Rilat and Jason Solwold tangled coming out of turn four with both cars flipping hard. The very next restart saw Liam Ryan turn it over in turn three. An eventful final few laps following a very fast and racy first 18 on a full moon Saturday night. Starks finished off the race with Colton Heath and Reece Goetz on his heels for one last green-white-checkered run and picked up the win. Solwold, Rilat and Ryan were the heat race winners, while Heath was fast time at 11.553.

Eric Fisher picked up his first win of the year in the Bob and Lori Scott 7s car. Fisher inherited the lead when Jason Bloodgood had a motor expire when leading early. Fisher paced the field the remaining 19 laps for the win over rapidly improving Jonathan Jorgenson and new point leader Chad Hillier. Bloodgood won the heat. Travis Jacobson set fast time at 11.196 seconds around the 3/10th mile clay oval.

Current point leader and defending champion Steve Parker won the 15 lap main event in the Sportsman Sprint division. Parker also captured one of the three heat races with the other two going to Ben Gunderson and Cory Swatzina.

Chase Goetz made it two in a row for the USAC Midget main event wins at Skagit Speedway and point leader Freddie Vela picked up the Outlaw Tuner victory.
