McINTYRE SCORES CAREER THIRD IN LINCOLN 410 SPRINT CAR MAIN

Lincoln Speedway Tease 2014

By Bill Meyer

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 4/26/2014 – Gerard McIntyre, Jr. Lincoln Speedway Tease 2014came from seventh starting spot to claim the 25-lap 410 sprint car feature win at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night.

McIntyre, who was timed fastest in warm-ups and won the first heat, was fast all night, advancing to fourth by the end of the third lap and grabbed the race lead from polesitter and race-long leader Matt Boland as the two passed under the flagstand to complete lap eight.

“We were real good, said McIntyre upon exiting his Weaver’s Body Shop/NAPA Auto Parts #16 in victory lane, “I want to say thanks to Fred (Putney) for watering the top there…and I want to thank everyone else for not going there.”

The $3,200 win was McIntyre’s second of the season, and first of the year in the Pigeon Hills. And was quite a turnaround from the week before.

“We had some motor problems last week, and Dad worked real hard on the car all week and got it figured out,” said McIntyre, “We had a real good race car there at the beginning, and it started to get a little loose toward the end. The track got rubbered up. I don’t know if anyone was still up top, but I couldn’t run up there anymore.

Actually, Brian Montieth was, putting on his normal charge late to come from 16th starting spot to finish third. With only one caution flag (for Mike Bittinger, who slowed to a stop on lap 18), Montieth simply ran out of time. He was on the back bumper of second-place Steve Owings at the checkered.

“I felt pretty secure there at the end. I was probably being a little conservative. We have a small motor in the car tonight, and it just hooks up real well here,” said McIntyre, “I can’t ask for anything better than this. Coming off the year we had last year…to start to year like this…I never thought we’d be working on win number three already.”

It’s was McIntyre’s third career win at Lincoln, and he became the fifth different winner in six events in the Pigeon Hills this year.

Round out the top five were Tyler Ross and Boland. Sixth through tenth were Freddie Rahmer, Billy Dietrich, Kevin Nagy, Austin Hogue, and Jim Siegel.

Heats for the 28 410 sprinters were won by McIntyre, Siegel, and Nagy, with Shane Hoff winning the consolation.

West York’s Mark Strickler started third and was scored the leader of every lap in claiming his first career 358 sprint car win.

Although he dominated the first 19 laps, a last-lap caution put 11th starting and 2013 track champ Niki Young on his back bumper for a one-lap shootout. Strickler stuck to the bottom and Young bobbled in turn two, ensuring Strickler’s .91-second win.

Young, Mike Bittinger (driving the Michael Markey #31), rookie Tyler Esh, and Chandler Leiby completed the top five, with Chase Dietz, C.J. Tracy, Doug Hammaker, Matt Findley, and 19th-starting Jeff Halligan rounding out the top ten.

Heats for the 26 358 sprinters were won by Bittinger, Dietz, and Young, with Halligan winning the consolation.

York’s Lucas Montgomery scored his third career Lincoln win in the 15-lap Central PA Legends feature. Montgomery started fourth and was scored the leader of a three-wide battle on the first lap. He led every lap thereafter, despite race-long pressure from 2013 Legends tour champion Bob Stough, who challenged the Impressive Signs #15 in every set of turns.

Montgomery’s win came on his own sponsor’s night. Stough settled for second, with Scott Haudeshell catching Scott Gobrecht on the final straightaway for third. Completing the top five was Mason Chaney.

Heats for the 28 Legends were won by Blaine Leppo, Haudeshell, and Montgomery, with Chad Ernst winning the consolation.

Next Saturday, Lincoln will host the 11th Annual Weldon Sterner Memorial for 410 sprint cars, along with the 358 sprints and All-American Outlaws. Time trials will begin at 7:30 p.m., with gates opening at 5:30 p.m.
