– HIGHLANDS, Texas (May 14, 2014) – For the first time in as long as he can remember and possibly ever, Channin Tankersley leads the ASCS Gulf South Region championship standings.

A third of the way through the season, Tankersley has a 44-point advantage thanks to consistency, which has been his focal point in recent years.

“I think I just have my head screwed on straight,” he said. “In previous years that I’ve run the Gulf South I’ve always had that mindset of winning it or wearing it. As of the past couple of years I’ve been focusing on trying to stay consistent and not tearing anything up. Consistency is what wins races and consistency is what wins championships.”

Although Tankersley is searching for his first ASCS Gulf South victory this season, he has recorded a region-best six top 10s in seven races.

“We’ve got all the confidence in the world,” he said. “Marvin and Peggy Pearson have given me really good equipment. As long as we can keep it up and things don’t go too crazy, we’re in good shape.”

There is still a long way to reach the championship, but this isn’t the first time Tankersley has been in the hunt. He finished third in the ASCS Gulf South Region championship standings last year and was the runner up in 2009. Tankersley has also placed in the top seven in 2011 and in 2008.

“I’d like to add that to the résumé and say I’m the points champion of something,” he said. “I think the last championship I won was in the early 2000s or late 1990s when I was racing go-karts.”

Tankersley will return to action with an ASCS Gulf South tripleheader – May 23 at Cotton Bowl Speedway in Paige, Texas; May 24 at Shady Oaks Speedway in Goliad, Texas; and May 25 at Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont, Texas.
