TELFORD, PA. – October 14, 2015 – Paul McMahan has many titles.
Race car driver. Husband. Father. Record holder.
The driver of the Bairs Tree Service, Nyce, Crete & Landis Block & Concrete, All-Star Performance #51 went out in time trials at Rolling Wheels Raceway in Elbridge, N.Y. and set a new track record with a lap of 15.461 seconds. Not only was the lap the quickest in the history of the track, it also set a new series record with lap average of 145.527 mph. What’s even more noteworthy is the fact that McMahan broke his own record that was set at Volusia Speedway Park near Barberville, Fl. in February 2011.
“We just had a very fast race car,” said McMahan. “We were about 5th in hot laps but more than a few tenths off of Brad Sweet. He was quickest. Barry (Jackson) made a few adjustments and we went out for time trials. Joey (Saldana) went out first and broke the track record and then Brad broke it again. We ended up breaking it and holding on. It was very cool to have that type of speed in our #51 car. We’ve been struggling lately and this was a shot in the arm for us.”
Fresh off a disappointing finish at the Champion Oil National Open, McMahan and the CJB Motorsports team was out for redemption. After setting the quickest lap in series history, the rest of the evening was just as strong.
“We were pretty good through our heat and the dash,” said McMahan. “In the feature, we broke the right front shock and that made the car a handful to drive. We ended up getting together with the 17. Unfortunately, he flipped but we stayed running. During the open red, the crew replaced the nose wing and the shock and we salvaged a 6th place finish. Normally, that wouldn’t be great but with the way we have ran the past month, it feels awesome to us. I think we were able to hit on a few things that’ll help us as we close out 2015.”
As the month of October continues on, the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series makes a return to the Lawrenceburg (Ind.) Speedway on Friday, October 16th.
“Lawrenceburg is a pretty racy place,” said McMahan, who finished in the 5th position in last years race. “I liked the old configuration but the new one is pretty cool too. For time trials we’re really hooked up and then the track widens out for the feature. It’s not uncommon to see 4-5 car wide racing there at times. All in all, it’s another opportunity.”
