VICTORVILLE, CA – May 4, 2010… Taking advantage of a night off from the USAC/CRA 410 Sprint Car Series, “The Cowboy” Tony Jones and the Alexander Racing Team competed at the Victorville Auto Raceway last Saturday night. The race was a great opportunity for the team to test several setup ideas, welcome new title sponsor Scott Sales Company, and prepare for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend doubleheader. The USAC/CRA Sprint Cars will travel to the Perris Auto Speedway and Tulare’s Groppetti Automotive Thunderbowl Raceway.
Having only raced at Victorville on two previous occasions for the Gardner-Faas Open Comp shows a few years back, the Alexanders looked forward to the event. The Victorville track format does not include time trials, instead favoring a pill pick to lineup the heat races.
The Alexander Team drew the outside front row position of the second heat race alongside Austin Williams. At the drop of the green flag, the son of Hall of Fame Driver Bubby Jones immediately grabbed the lead. In true “Cowboy fashion,” Jones took Mark Alexander’s Scott Sales Company silver #4 entry around the outside line. The 3/8-mile clay oval was fast, as Jones set a blistering pace and won the eight lap event ahead of Williams and defending track champion Seth Wilson.
By virtue of his win in the second heat race, the 2007 USAC/CRA Champion would start in the fifth position alongside former track champion John Aden in the feature. At the early stages, the “silver bullet” had a tight setup as Tony soldiered on by lifting the left front wheel through the corners. Taking advantage of a red flag for a flip by Austin Williams who walked away uninjured, Crew Chief Steve Alexander made adjustments to the silver #4 machine. The changes settled the car and Jones began to battle his way forward. Also on the move was Seth Wilson, who found the bottom line out of turn four to pass both Jones and Ronnie Gardner.
From then on, “The Cowboy” got his elbows up to chase down and pass Gardner and Cody Williams on the lightning fast track. Jones charged hard after Wilson during the final laps of the main event, but finished second to the two time track champion. The Alexander team was happy with the performance and congratulates Seth Wilson and the Racing Optics crew on their victory.
Alexander Racing would like to thank Scott Sales Company, LaVilla Mexican Restaurant, Ferreira Dairy, VP Racing Fuels, Extreme Mufflers, Larry Murakami Contracting, SCRAFAN.COM, Zanzabuku Sports Lounge, Garnica Trucking, Berdoo Auto Body, Scotty Stallmo Trucking, Ray’s Trucking, So-Cal Performance, J&D Performance, VGI Graphics, and Reliable Energy for their support.
Celebrating their 20th year in racing, the Alexander Team will return to action with USAC/CRA on May 29th at the Perris Auto Speedway and May 30th at Tulare’s Groppetti Automotive Thunderbowl Raceway. For more information, visit the team’s website at www.alexanderracing.4t.com.
