Dover Wins Fan Appreciation Night at Eagle

by Greg Soukup

A warm afternoon with sunny skies, made for a nearly perfect racing evening as Eagle Raceway greeted the large crowd that showed up for Fan Appreciation and Moms Rule Night sponsored by the Lincoln Saltdogs Saturday. Although the car count wasn’t up to the record one of a week before, there still were 164 teams signing into the pits.

As happened the week before, the heats went off without any significant happenings until the Sprint Car heats were run. On the start of the third heat Terry Cadwallader spun his #33 and collected 5 others, including the 91 of Mitchell Moore who came to a stop upside down in turn 2. Stu Snyder’s 23S was the only car involved that could continue after a quick trip to the work area. Tige Jensen’s 71, the 51 of Mike Boston, Billy Alley’s 22 and 1 other car were able to avoid the pile-up; Cadwallader also restarted.

In the NAPA IMCA Sport Modified A Feature Laini Schwartz’s 18 was first back to the flag stand on the starting lap with Joey Danley in the 14, Nathan Kobus’ 15 and the 90 of Kevin Jochum close on her rear bumper. Lap 4 saw Rick Rohr move his #74 up to fourth. Several laps later Benji Legg’s 25B overtook Rohr for fourth. Danley spun in 1 & 2 shortly after, bringing out the yellow. Legg wasted no time moving up to 2nd a lap after the restart. At the end it was Schwartz, Legg, Kobus and Kyle Prauner who grabbed fourth in the waning laps.

“It was my second A Main win here at Eagle, but it was my 3rd victory of the night. I won my heat, the ‘Dress the Driver contest’ at intermission and then the feature” Schwartz said. She also related “I want to send special thanks to my Mom and Dad, and of course Pork”. Laini’s sponsors include Pro Tech Electric, TBJ Promotions, The Draft House, T. Hurt Construction and Dry Slick Graphics.

Next was the A Main for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks. At the end of the first circuit Dan Noonan was out front in the #12 and Jason Tadlock’s 99, the B4 of Ben Becher and Mark Saathoff’s 97M rounded out the top 4. Saathoff jumped up to 2nd on lap 2 and Becher spun to the infield the next time around. That made the running order Noonan, Saathoff, Tadlock and the 83 of Robbie Hobus. RJ Macku cracked the top 4 on the restart in his #1R, moving up to third the next lap as Hobus retained fourth. Macku snared second 2 laps later and it was 4 more rounds before he grabbed the lead, passing Noonan on the high side. Last week’s winner, Roy Armstrong moved into fourth after several more laps and then up to third the next lap. At the checkers it was Macku, Noonan, Armstrong and Hobus.

“I really fought hard tonight, and had to come from a 10th place start. I played it smart and passed one car at a time, just trying to stay out of trouble. I kept watching for Roy to pull up beside me, but just stayed on the high line and held on for the win” related Macku. He concluded the interview by saying “I really want to thank Keith Dragoo, Chad Fegley and Tom Marsh for their support and help”. RJ’s sponsors include The Shop Inc., FRE Racing Engines, Chris High Painting and Red Line Grafix.

The first lap of the Rev Honey IMCA Modified finale saw Terry Richards in the lead with his 18, Ed Raines’ 11AA second, Lacey Tuttle’s Z00 third and Justin Wulf’s 86 in fourth. Shane Hiatt got his 21H past Wulf on lap #3. 2 more circuits were in the books when Doug Deterding spun the 13 in turn 3, collecting the 8C of Chad Andersen and Bruce Hascall’s 7A. The restart showed Richards first followed by Raines, Tuttle and Hiatt. Dylan Smith moved the #95 to fourth on the restart lap. Another lap and Bob Zoubek passed Smith for fourth and 3 laps later he got up to third with Johnny Saathoff’s 96J taking fourth. Zoubek then advanced to second the next time around. The next lap Saathoff jumped up to third with Smith retaking fourth. Zoubek took the lead after 5 more rounds as Smith got up to third. Smith then came up to second 3 laps later. The finishing order saw Zoubek with the victory, Smith second, Richards third and Saathoff fourth.

“My heat race saw some tough luck when the header got smashed. I was chocking and crying from the exhaust coming into the cockpit” Zoubek said. “I started 7th in the A, and just picked them off 1 at a time. It was a tough race, especially with Dylan. All I could do was hope that someone screwed up and I could pass them as the race ran” he said to finish the interview. Zoubek’s sponsors include Kramer Storage, Klein Construction, Joe’s Place, Gropp Trucking and Vynalek Farms.

The Exhaust Pros IMCA Sport Compacts moved onto the track next for their A Feature. Chad Bassinger’s 4X was in the lead on lap 1 followed by Travis Schellpeper’s 45S, Kenny Roberts’ 69 and the 66 of Trevor Noonan. Schellpeper passed Bassinger on the second lap. Matt Moyer cracked the top 4 the next time around with his #69, coming up to third on lap 7, and taking second the following circuit as Bassinger dropped back quickly. Moyer snagged the lead for good on lap 9. The yellow flag flew on lap 10 for debris on the front stretch. At that time it was Moyer, Schellpeper, Roberts and Noonan. Kyle Gannon got the 66G into fourth on lap 13, only to be repassed by Noonan the next circuit. Another yellow flag flew as 1 more lap had passed when Erica Cronin’s 30 and another car came to a halt in turn 2. Gannon got back into fourth one lap after the restart. From there to the finish the top four remained unchanged with Moyer winning, Schellpeper second, Roberts third and Gannon fourth.

Moyer’s said “I just want to thank all of the fans for coming out in such tough economic times to support all of us racers”. Matt’s sponsors are Kinnersley Grading and General Siding.

Jack Dover’s #53 grabbed the lead in the Budweiser 360 Sprint Car Feature from his 2nd row starting position. Close behind was the #22 of Billy Alley, John Klabunde’s 77 and the 71 of Tige Jensen. Trevor Grossenbacher passed Jensen on lap 2, moving his #35 into fourth as Alley moved past Dover for the lead. Grossenbacher got around Klabunde 3 laps later. Jensen moved back into fourth on lap 9. 5 laps later Dover again retook the point. Grossenbacher did a 360 degree spin on lap 17 and the yellow lights were lit. At that time it was Dover, Alley, Jensen and Klabunde. The caution flag flew again a lap after the restart with the 2A of Randy Hibbs stopped in turn 4. Klabunde passed Jensen 2 laps after that restart, with Jay Russell moving the #76 into fourth the next circuit. Klabunde spun his racer in turn 2 shortly after that, allowing Jason Danley’s 82 to move up to fourth. Danley advanced into 3rd 2 laps later. On the white flag lap Russell’s 76, the 28 of Ken Klabunde and Jordan Boston’s 57 spun to a halt in turn 1 with the 21 of Ryan Kitchen stopping at the top of turn 2. When the green/white/checker concluding laps were done Dover emerged victorious with Alley second, Danley third and the 51 of Mike Boston fourth.

“I knew that I had to stay with Billy, because he’s so tough. I took it easy on my tires in the beginning, so I didn’t really race too hard. I started pushing it about half way through, and told myself ‘Slower is faster’. I found a spot in 3 & 4 where there was a spot of rubber on the bottom and really got a launch off of that every time around” Dover said. Dover’s sponsors include Thorpe’s Body Shop, Home Pride, Butlerbuilt, Trail Performance Coatings, Oil Medics and Ledger Motorsports.
