STARKS TOP FIVE THWARTED BY ENGINE AT SKAGIT

Inside Line Promotions

โ€“ ALGER, Wash. (June 6) โ€“ Itโ€™s frustrating enough to have an engine expire. But when it happens to take away a top five, itโ€™s down right aggravating.

That was the situation for Trey Starks, who lost a 410 engine midway through the feature last Saturday at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash.

โ€œItโ€™s not a good statistic, but I think of the 10 or 11 times Iโ€™ve raced at Skagit, I still havenโ€™t finished an A Main,โ€ the 15-year-old from Puyallup, Wash., said. โ€œWeโ€™ve either wrecked or lost engines.

โ€œSaturday was going good. I thought we were actually going to finish.โ€

Starks qualified seventh quickest, which started him on the pole of his heat race.

โ€œWe ran off and left them,โ€ said Starks, who won the heat race. โ€œWe were really fast.โ€

After starting seventh in the feature, Starks fell back to ninth on the opening lap when the start was jumbled. However, Starks got by a car before a caution and then passed two others soon after the restart to climb to sixth.

โ€œWe ran down fifth in about two laps when we had an open track,โ€ he said. โ€œI had a clear track so I could see my entry better. Then going into turn three midway through the race I had to lift. When I tried to pick the throttle back up, the engine tied up.โ€

As his engine issues emerged, a caution waved for a wreck involving two cars ahead of Starks. Without the trouble, he would have been fourth. Instead, Starks went to the pits with a 16th-place finish.

โ€œWe were definitely one of the fastest cars out there,โ€ he said.
