STARKS TOP FIVE THWARTED BY ENGINE AT SKAGIT

Inside Line Promotions

– ALGER, Wash. (June 6) – It’s frustrating enough to have an engine expire. But when it happens to take away a top five, it’s down right aggravating.

That was the situation for Trey Starks, who lost a 410 engine midway through the feature last Saturday at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash.

“It’s not a good statistic, but I think of the 10 or 11 times I’ve raced at Skagit, I still haven’t finished an A Main,” the 15-year-old from Puyallup, Wash., said. “We’ve either wrecked or lost engines.

“Saturday was going good. I thought we were actually going to finish.”

Starks qualified seventh quickest, which started him on the pole of his heat race.

“We ran off and left them,” said Starks, who won the heat race. “We were really fast.”

After starting seventh in the feature, Starks fell back to ninth on the opening lap when the start was jumbled. However, Starks got by a car before a caution and then passed two others soon after the restart to climb to sixth.

“We ran down fifth in about two laps when we had an open track,” he said. “I had a clear track so I could see my entry better. Then going into turn three midway through the race I had to lift. When I tried to pick the throttle back up, the engine tied up.”

As his engine issues emerged, a caution waved for a wreck involving two cars ahead of Starks. Without the trouble, he would have been fourth. Instead, Starks went to the pits with a 16th-place finish.

“We were definitely one of the fastest cars out there,” he said.
