Chad Humston – McCool Win Tops Weekend!

By Bill W

July 7, 2011 – Chad Humston and the Mark Burch Motorsports #1m team notched win #2 last weekend at the Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Nebraska. The win came in ASCS-Midwest action. The Giltner, Nebraska driver finished seventh at the I-80 Speedway near Greenwood on Friday night, and at Knoxville Raceway’s Twin Features night Saturday, he finished second before getting caught up in an accident in the second main event. This weekend, tentative plans have the team hitting Jackson, Minnesota on Friday before returning to Knoxville.

The win at McCool Junction started in the heat where Chad started fourth. “Everything worked out perfect for us,” he says. “We had a good run there in the heat and finished second behind Billy Alley. He was bad ass fast. I couldn’t catch him even with a yellow.”

Chad’s luck continued. “The redraw went perfect too,” he says. “I think we were the fourth or fifth person to draw and we drew the pole.”

Chad proceeded to run green to checker up front in the 25-lapper. “The track was nice,” he says. “It had a good cushion all the way around, and that’s where I ran. We were quick on top. Some were saying there was some rubber in the bottom of three and four. There were two grooves all the way around.”

The team is on a bit of a roll right now. “It’s a great confidence booster for the whole team to win a race like that,” says Chad. “Guys like (Danny) Lasoski and (Brian) Brown were there.”

On Friday night, Chad raced to a heat win at I-80. “We ended up winning it,” he says. “I found the bottom in three and four and that got us by Robby Wolfgang.”

The feature saw a lot of jockeying back and forth, but Chad ended where he drew, seventh. “It was kind of a weird racetrack,” he says. “There was a lot of dirt on the track, but there weren’t a whole lot of places to run. I tried the top a bit, but the car was a little free. I couldn’t get anything to work up there. I made a couple moves but we ended up where we started.”

Things started well at Knoxville on Saturday. “It looked like it was going to be a great night for us,” says Chad. “We qualified second, and ran second in the heat. We had some things we needed to do for the feature.”

After getting tuned up, Chad started second and chased Clint Garner until making a late race pass. Unfortunately, it was negated. “I wish it would have been green to checker,” he says. “On the white flag lap, we were able to pass Clint for the lead in one and two, but the red came out. I just couldn’t get by Clint after that. Sometimes the yellow helps you, and sometimes it doesn’t.”

Starting deep in the pack, the charge was on. “We were moving right along…moving forward,” says Chad. “I was able to pass a couple of cars and before I knew it, the car in front of me was stopped. There was no way I could avoid it, and we rolled it over. It was a bummer.”

With the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series running at the Jackson Speedway in Minnesota on Friday night, the team is tentatively planning a run there. “We’re looking at Jackson on Friday and definitely Knoxville on Saturday,” says Chad.
