Brian Brown – Victory at the Missouri State Fair!

By Bill W

August 22, 2011 – Brian Brown put his name in the record books yet again, by winning his fourteenth career feature at the Missouri State Fair Speedway in Sedalia on Sunday. The race was sanctioned by the ASCS-Warrior region and hosted 40 sprint cars. The Grain Valley, Missouri driver will compete with his FVP #21 410 at Knoxville Raceway this Saturday.

Electricity was in the air, both in the pits and the grandstands. “It was a great field of cars, and it was one of the biggest crowds I’ve seen at Sedalia,” says Brian. “The track wasn’t too good early, but they kept working at it throughout the night.”

The heat went well, despite some tough competition. “I felt like we had the toughest heat with Jonathan Cornell and Tony Bruce on the front row,” says Brian. “Then we had Danny (Lasoski) and I, and (Mark) Shirshekan too. We were able to go from third to second.”

Drawing a starting spot inside of row three, Brian wondered if he could catch the leaders. “We felt going in, that we had an opportunity, but we didn’t know if the track would take rubber, and if it did, how much passing there would be, “ he says. “We were able to get to third pretty quickly. Then we were able to get by Brad Loyet on a restart. I chased Danny for a bit before there was a yellow with about fifteen laps to go.”

With his Uncle in striking distance, Brian had revenge on his mind. Danny had passed him on Friday night in Grain Valley for a win. “The last fifteen laps went non-stop,” he says. “I was able to get by him on the restart, and he drove back by me later. All the gloves were off the last fifteen laps. It was a great race. Even if I hadn’t have won, I would have said it was a great race.”

He was able to hold on for the win and claim a bit of redemption. “It was a lot of fun and I hope the fans enjoyed it,” says Brian. “Usually, when Danny and I go at it, I’ve been on the other end of the stick. This one felt pretty good.”

Friday night was a bit of a different story, as the ASCS-Warriors visited Valley Speedway in Grain Valley. “Going there, you want to run good in front of the hometown crowd,” says Brian. “We have friends and family that don’t get to see us race, so it’s good to be racing in front of them.”

After driving from sixth to third in his heat on the bullring, Brian was ready for the feature. “We started decent in the heat,” he says. “We drew outside the front row for the feature. Obviously, I felt good about that.”

Brian cruised out front, but meanwhile, his Uncle was coming throw the field from row eight. “We led from the start, and I felt like we were setting a pretty good pace,” he says. “It was kind of one of those situations where you feel better running second. I just kind of got out-driven there. Danny just out-drove me, and (Brad) Loyet got around me when I was trying to get back by Danny.”

Brian ended third at the checkers. “That was a tough one to swallow,” he says. “I felt like we had a car to win, but I didn’t live up to my end of the bargain. You shouldn’t start on the front row and get beat by someone starting fifteenth.”

With the win under their belt the FVP #21 team heads to Knoxville Saturday. “We’ve yet to win a 410 race this year at Knoxville,” says Brian. “We want to get back there and try to get that done. We had a good Nationals so hopefully we can use that momentum.”

Brian’s Q&A

Brad Burress asks: What are your feelings on the state of sprint car racing in Missouri?

Brian answers: You look at the past weekend, and we had 40 cars in Sedalia, and 28 in Grain Valley. We’re struggling with the tracks right now. There’s no consistent weekly program. We definitely have the cars and fans. Unfortunately, we had two tracks (Sedalia and LaMonte) a couple years ago both try to run Friday nights. Now we don’t have either one running weekly. I really wish there was a way guys here could run Friday, Saturday and Sunday for $1,200 to $1,500. I think the cars and fans are here, we just need the tracks now to run.
