OHSWEKEN SPEEDWAY: TWO IN A ROW FOR COLLARD

by Tommy Goudge,Peter Anderson photo

(August 26, 2011) – Jamie Collard followed up the biggest win of his Sprint Car career by winning again on Friday night at Ohsweken Speedway in the 20 lap Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car feature. Paul Klager won the Mod-Lite Stars Championship Tour North event, Cory Turner was awarded the Lighthouse Tattoos Thunder Stock win, while Karl Sault won the HRW Automotive Mini Stock feature, and Rodney Rutherford got the Pierced Parts Bomber victory.

CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING SPRINT CARS
Jim Huppunen and Wayne Johnson started on the front row with Johnson getting the early lead, but a complete restart was needed after Dave Dykstra got upside down in turn three. Johnson took the lead when the race began again, but teammate Jamie Collard moved up from 6th on the grid and eventually got by for the win. Johnson settled for 2nd, followed by Keith Dempster, Travis Cunningham, and Mitch Brown. Points leader Jim Huppunen spun and restarted at the rear, eventually finishing 12th.

“I knew Wayne would be fast tonight,” Jamie said afterwards. “We talked setup and we shared what we had. We were a little different – he was setting up for the top, and I went for the bottom, and apparently it worked out. We’ve been working on setups big time, and trying shocks and trying different bars and everything. We finally figured it out. The car is unbelievably good. I just can’t thank the crew enough.”

Collard entered the night third in the standings, 64 points behind Jim Huppunen, and 43 points behind Kyle Patrick. His win coupled with 7th place for Patrick and 12th for Huppunen cut the gap nearly in half, and the championship is up for grabs with 2 races left in the title chase.

“We’re really going hard for the points championship,” Collard said.
“(Huppunen’s) a long way out, but if we keep getting these (wins), it might help out. We’re hoping to be strong at the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals too, and bring home the victory for Canada.”

Heat races for the 23 car field went to Jamie Collard, Kyle Moffit, and Jim Huppunen.

MOD-LITE START CHAMPIONSHIP TOUR NORTH
Paul Klager and Derek Wagner started on the front row for the 4th visit of Mod-Lites to Ohsweken in 2011. Klager and Wagner traded spots throughout the race, with Josh Sliter also in the fray until his car went up in smoke. Tour points leader Shawn Sliter had mechanical problems in his heat race and started at the back of the feature field driving a borrowed car. He drove through the field to finish 3rd and take a big lead in the standings.

Klager brought out his older car which he’s won many times with at Ohsweken in the past, after racing a different one in earlier events this season.

“We dusted this thing off,” said Paul. “It’s been sitting in the back of my shop all year, and this is our own car, it’s the one I know well, and we got it back together for last Saturday, worked the bugs out of it, and here we are today.”

Heat races for the 18 car field went to Klager and Wagner. The Mod-Lite Stars will be back on September 17 to race during the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals.

LIGHTHOUSE TATTOOS THUNDER STOCKS
Phil Nyssen started 3rd and dominated the Thunder Stock feature, but his car failed the post-race technical inspection. Cory Turner was awarded the feature win as a result, a first for the rookie driver. Lee Winger, Larry Czinege, Jr., Mike Thorne, and Wyatt Van Wart rounded out the top 5.

Heat races for the 20 car field went to Phil Nyssen and Jim Lampman.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
Karl Sault entered the evening tied for the Mini Stock points lead with Abel Castelein, but opened up a lead again by winning the non-stop feature. Castelein finished 13th after starting at the back of the 28 car field. Jake Brown, Jason Lungaro, Aaron Wiley, and Dale Cooke finished 2nd through 5th.

“We’ve been having trouble for the last couple of weeks,” said Karl afterwards. “Two weeks ago we had a fuel issue, and last week the axle broke. We got it all fixed and back together and here we are!”

Heat races were claimed by Sault, Brown, and Lungaro

PIERCED PARTS BOMBERS
Rodney Rutherford went back to the Engine Pro Racing Winner’s Circle on Friday in the Bomber event, while points leader Jesse McDonald had a flat tire and didn’t finish. Rutherford will be back in the lead as a result, after losing it last week. Dusty DeBoer, Brady Longboat, Kathi Dickie, and Jeremy May rounded out the top 5.

Heat races for the 17 car field went to Rutherford and Dickie.
