Chad Humston – Fast Track!

By Bill W

August 30, 2011 – It was a fast track Saturday night at the Knoxville Raceway. A 360 track record was laid down in time trials, and Chad Humston registered the second quick time of the night. The Giltner, Nebraska driver and the Mark Burch Motorsports #1m team didn’t get much luck after that however, and a DNF in the feature was the end result. The team plans on returning to Knoxville on Saturday for Season Championship night.

Clint Garner set quick time and a new track record in qualifying, and Chad was second quick. “We were second quick, but we were still a long way off from Clint,” he says. “He really had that thing dialed in to set a record like he did.”

Starting sixth in his heat on a fast track, the luck, or lack thereof, came in the form of the helmet shield popping open. “We should have finished better there,” says Chad of the heat that gave the top five the honor of starting within the feature invert. “I’m never one to make excuses, but I ran into the first corner and my shield came open. The fresh air was fine, but the dirt and mud and rocks weren’t. Once I got that handled, I tried to recover, but it was tough to pass on the track the way it was.”

Chad pulled up on the fifth place car on numerous occasions, but could not make the pass. “It was close racing for a while, but we couldn’t get there,” he says. “That was big, because that put us starting back in 16th for the feature.”

The team readied for the feature and their starting spot outside of row eight. Another patented charge from the #1m in the feature was expected, but it was not to be. “I thought the car felt pretty good to start the race,” says Chad. “I think we were moving forward for the four laps we were actually in the race. We broke a rocker arm and that ended the night.”

The DNF was obviously a disappointment. “I really believe we had a top ten and maybe a top five car from where we were starting,” says Chad. “Stuff happens, and there’s nothing you can do about it once it’s over.”

The team plans on running Knoxville Championship Cup Series Season Championship Night at the Knoxville Raceway, and then may venture to the Belleville Highbanks in Kansas on Sunday.
