– HIGHLANDS, Texas (Aug. 29) – Channin Tankersley is finished racing for points.

Now, it’s about pride. And wins.

“We’re out of the points just for the fact that we’ve had engine trouble two times in a row and then we got in a crash,” he said. “Pretty much I’m just going for wins now.”

The 20-year-old from Highlands, Texas, resumes the ASCS Gulf South Region with a doubleheader this weekend. He ranks seventh in the standings, only 34 points of out sixth place. But with four ASCS Gulf South races remaining, Tankersley is done chasing points.

It starts on Saturday at Gator Motorplex in Willis, Texas, where he won a heat race and finished fifth in the feature during his only event – May 28 – at the high-banked, ¼-mile track this season.

“We do decent there,” he said. “It’s really, really dry and it rubbers down. There have been several occasions where it has been a good racing track. But 75 percent of the time it rubbers down.

“Last time we were there it was awesome. It was real racy with a top, bottom and middle for about half of the race. And then it took rubber.”

Tankersley wraps up the weekend on Sunday at Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont, Texas, where he has raced the most this season. In six events, he has won two features and four heat races at the semi-banked, ¼-mile dirt oval.

“I’ve had a lot of experience at that track,” Tankersley said. “I like the track and the way you race it fits my style. You’ve got to be aggressive and on the wheel to pass cars there, and you can’t be afraid of running the top.”
