DOVER 5th IN LONESTAR SPRINT NATIONALS FINALE

– KILGORE, Texas (Oct. 17) – It was another big weekend with another great showing for Jack Dover.

The 21-year-old from Springfield, Neb., picked up a pair of top 10s with the ASCS National Tour at the inaugural three-day LoneStar Sprint Nationals at Lone Star Speedway in Kilgore, Texas.

“I hadn’t raced on that track since they shortened it from a ½ mile to a 3/8 mile,” he said. “It took us awhile to get down there, but it was worth it in the end.”

Truck problems forced Dover to miss Thursday’s race, which might have been a blessing in disguise. The rough track led to more than 30 flipped cars.

The track smoothed out over the rest of the weekend and Dover took full advantage starting with his first heat race. He began on the pole of Friday’s heat and led all 10 laps for the victory, which lined him up sixth in the feature.

With the top four finishers being locked into Saturday’s $12,000-to-win, $1,000-to-start feature, Dover was on the gas from the first green flag. He picked up a position early and challenged for the fourth-and-final lock-in before lapped traffic slowed him in the closing laps. Dover settled for sixth place, which gave him enough points to start 11th in Saturday’s 40-lap feature.

“I had a couple of opportunities to slide people in the top five, but I didn’t want to take myself or anybody out,” he said. “Luckily we earned enough points to start directly in Saturday’s feature.”

Dover quickly drove into the top 10 and began working his way toward the top five. The first 25 laps went without caution before a spinout by a competitor allowed the group to bunch back up. Dover was sixth on the restart and he passed Johnny Herrera for fifth soon after.

Dover closed to the back of Gary Wright for fourth place, but came up a car length shy of passing for the position at the checkered flag. It was Dover’s 32nd top five of the season.

“The track was really fast up top so it was hard to pass many cars,” he said. “I was definitely going after the win, but I think driving from 11th to fifth was a good night.”

Dover is staying in Texas this week to compete with the ASCS National Tour on Friday and Saturday at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, for the 38th annual Winter Nationals.
