April 4, 2012 – Kerry Madsen and the Keneric Racing #29 team finished up their western swing with the World of Outlaws last weekend in Merced, California. The St. Mary’s, New South Wales, driver is glad to be back to his stateside home and the team’s headquarters in Knoxville, Iowa as he prepares for his next outing. The WoO takes a weekend off before hitting Paducah, Kentucky and Pevely, Missouri on April 13 and 14.

The Merced Speedway hosted the WoO on Friday night. The track underwent a recent reconfiguration. “It was a lot better than last year,” says Kerry. “It was a little more open, and the track kind of slicked off at the end. I thought it was a pretty good track at the end, especially back in the pack where I was racing. It got slick and you could run the top and bottom. Last year, it was just heavy all night. No one was complaining, and they had a good crowd.”

Kerry registered the thirteenth quick time of the night in a field of 29 sprinters. “We were third overall in hot laps, but unfortunately, we drew last out to qualify,” he says. “The track had slowed down quite a bit by then, and we were thirteenth quick overall. That put us one spot out of the inversion for the front row of the heat.”

He was able to finish fifth in his heat and lock himself into the main event, where he would post 13th. “We lost a bunch of spots early on,” says Kerry. “We had a good car, so we came back up through there. We were up to eleventh at one point, but a lost a spot late and ended up twelfth.”

It was a solid finish for a team that had a decent western swing that was plagued by Mother Nature much of the way. “Overall, we had a pretty nice racecar,” says Kerry. “It was a little tough to do anything from where we were. I think we could have run in the top ten, but I just made a couple of errors.”

The going was tough on the tight bullring. “It really was a hard track to maneuver, because it was so tiny,” says Kerry. “Every race (crew chief) Rob (Hart) and I have together, we are getting better. We seem to be on the right track, and we had a fast racecar.”

The team is mulling over racing plans this weekend, but plans to tackle Paducah and Pevely next week. “We’ll take what we got,” says Kerry of his drive at Merced. “I’m a little excited to get out of California and get on some of these racetracks out here.”
