California youngster, Rico Abreu, was in action over the past weekend with the USAC National Midget Tour for a pavement/dirt double header, and while his pavement woes continued, he had a strong run on dirt going until a broken wheel ended his night.

Abreu’s weekend kicked off at the Plymouth Speedway in Plymouth, IN on Friday night for the Plymouth Palooza on pavement.

Rico’s struggles began early as he timed in 18th quickest out of 19 entrants, and proceeded to score second in his heat race.

Starting in the back of the pack in the feature, Abreu slowly picked off cars aboard his Abreu Vineyards/Toyota TRD/Keth Kunz Motorsports entry as he worked his way toward the top-ten.

As the race wound down, Abreu was in the 13th spot, but was pretty disappointed with his finish.

“I just keep struggling on the pavement,” he said. “Keith and his guys work their butts off, but I just can’t seem to get my job done.”

On Sunday the series visited Angel Park Speedway in Sun Prairie , Wisconsin for a night of dirt track action.

With 27 cars on hand, Abreu stopped the clocks with the eighth fastest time during time trials, putting him in the second heat where he would pick up a fourth place finish.

Starting eighth in the feature, Abreu put on quite a show for the fans as he rode the high, scary side of the speedway using the wall to his advantage as he rode his way all the way up to the fourth spot.

As Abreu began tracking down the top three, he had an issue with his wheel, and was relegated to a 14th place finish.

“Our car was pretty awesome tonight at Sun Prairie,” said Rico. “It was a cool little track, but I just kept getting into the wall, and I ended up breaking a wheel. We were tracking down the leaders, but it’s just nice to finally get off the pavement and get a good finish.”

Rico and his team would like to thank Abreu Vineyards, Toyota, ButlerBuilt, Kaeding Performance, Stadelhofer Construction, Outlaw Wings, Swift Metal Finishings, and Petersen Media for their partnership.

ON TAP: Abreu and his KKM team will be in action again this weekend with the POWRi Midgets as they will be in action Saturday night at the Wilmot Speedway, before returning to the Angel Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, WI on Sunday.
