WATSONVILLE, CALIFORNIA (October 3, 2012) – With two races to go in the Ocean Sprints presented by Taco Bravo, Fremont’s Shane Golobic holds a narrow 25 point advantage over Stockton’s Brad Furr heading into Friday’s penultimate race at John Prentice’s Ocean Speedway Watsonville.
Furr drove the #2 Ray Scheidt’s Electric entry into victory lane on Friday September 21 for his first Ocean Sprints win of the season in a wild duel with six-time winner Tommy Tarlton while Golobic finished fourth.
Golobic, in Steve Osborne’s #9j entry, has yet to visit victory lane in 2012 but has been a model of consistency and also scored quick-time in the last Ocean Sprints event. A pair of wins to wrap up the season would almost assure Golobic the championship ahead of Furr.
The Furr and Golobic battle has raged on all season-long while a bevy of part-time drivers have made their marks on the season. Fresno’s Dominic Scelzi, the son of NHRA legend Gary Scelzi, has visited victory lane once this season in the Scezli Enterprises #41. Other drivers who have made an impression this season include 2012 Civil War Sprints champion Andy Forsberg of Auburn, with best finishes of second and third in limited appearances in his #92 car.
Also expected on Friday night is San Jose’s Nick Green, son of Sprint Car legend Tim Green, who will drive the championship Keith Day Trucking #22 in lieu of Salinas’ Ronnie Day who is still recovering from a summer back injury.
Young Central Valley Sprint Car standout rookies Carson Macedo and D.J. Netto, both of Hanford, are also expected to join the fray on Friday night. Netto recently won the 2012 Rebel Cup Sprints championship at Kings Speedway in Hanford, with Macedo the runner-up in the series and named Rookie of the Year. Macedo has been a perennial hard charger this season by winning the DDNi Hard Charger award on several occasions.
Other regular contenders in the division include Gilroy’s Kurt Nelson, San Jose’s Ryan Rusconi, Corralitos’ Jerry Bonnema, Salinas’ Carter Train, San Martin’s Craig Smith, San Jose’s Wayne Katen, Salinas’ Jeremy and Jason Chisum, and Petaluma’s Jason Toft.
Friday’s races for the Ocean Sprints will also include racing for the American Stocks, Dwarf Cars, IMCA Sport Modifieds, 600 Micro Sprints, and Wingless Sprints. Adult tickets are just $17 with seniors 65+ $15 and kids ages 6-12 are $13. The family pass for two adults and two children is value priced at just $55. Qualifying will get underway at 6 p.m. with fan gates opening at 4:30 p.m.
