Selinsgrove, PA —  (June 8, 2013) — Pat Cannon of Etters and Jason Shultz of Carlisle thrilled fans with a wheel-to-wheel duel for the win in Saturday night’s 25-lap 358 sprint car feature at Selinsgrove Speedway. On the 18th circuit Cannon secured the lead and went on to win his fourth race of the year and 45th of his career at the track in 358-360 sprint car competition driving the Highlands’ Tire & Service Centers No. 3.

Coleby Frye of Dover pulled off an exciting win over Jeff Rine of Danville with a lap 27 pass in the 30-lap Paul Stine Chevrolet championship race. Frye earned $2,500 for his second win of the season and the 11th of his career at Selinsgrove. Rine set fast time in qualifying with a lap of 19.350 (98.53 average miles per hour) seconds.

Brad Mitch of McClure powered to his second win of the season in the 15-lap pro stock feature, while John Fowler Jr. of Montandon made a last-race pass by Ricky Bender of Jolliett for his fourth roadrunner win of the season in the division’s 12-lap main event.

Selinsgrove Speedway will present the 10th annual Joe Whitcomb Memorial for 358 sprint cars plus late models, pro stocks, and roadrunners at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 15. The 30-lap tribute race will pay $1,771 to win and $220 to start. Track gates will open at 5 p.m.

Fourth-place starter Cody Keller quickly drove into the lead at the start of the sprint car feature. By lap five, Keller was leading sixth-place starter Ryan Kissinger and 12th-place starter Pat Cannon. Three laps later, Cannon took over the second position and began to reel in Keller in slower traffic.

On the 10th circuit at the start/finish line, Cannon passed Keller for the lead. Meanwhile, 10th-place starter Jason Shultz began to show a lot of speed and stormed into the second spot by lap 12. A lap later, Shultz found himself in the lead after making an inside pass by Cannon racing off the fourth turn.  Cannon, however, did not let Shultz stray too far as an intense high-speed chase for the lead unfolded in traffic.

Cannon streaked back into the lead using the inside lane on the backstretch on lap 18. While Shultz attempted to keep Cannon in his sights, ninth-place starter TJ Stutts advanced to third. At the checkered flag, Cannon was victorious by 1.6 seconds over Shultz, Stutts, Kissinger, and eighth-place starter Derek Locke.

Jeff Rine drew the pole position for the start of the late model championship and powered into the lead at the drop of the green flag. Second-place starter Bryan Bernheisel held down the runner-up position while sixth-place starter Coleby Frye advanced to third on the second lap.

The event’s first caution flag unfurled on lap three when AJ Hoffman and Tony Adams crashed on the backstretch. When the race resumed, Rine continued to set a torrid pace while Frye found a way around Bernheisel for the second spot.

At the halfway point of the race, Rine was leading Frye, Bernheisel, fifth-place starter Jim Yoder, and third-place starter Andy Haus. On a lap 17 restart, Frye attempted to pass Rine for the lead racing back into turn one to no avail. Frye chased Rine around the half-mile at breakneck speeds and on the 27th lap made the winning pass using the high line off turn two.

Frye held the front spot for the rest of the distance and posted a mere .98 of a second margin of victory over Rine, B. Bernheisel, Yoder, and fourth-place starter Jim Bernheisel.

Second-place starter Brad Mitch pulled into the lead at the start of the pro stock feature and was trailed by polesitter AJ Stroup the entire distance. Fifth-place starter Nathan Long steered into the third position and made it a three-car battle at the front of the pack.

For all 15 laps, Stroup raced in Mitch’s shadow but could not pull off a successful pass for the lead. At the checkered flag, Mitch was victorious by one-second over Stroup. Long, sixth-place starter Shaun Miller, and seventh-place starter Kyle Bachman completed the top five.

Ricky Bender started the roadrunner feature on the outside of the front row and took the early lead. Bender was followed by third-place starter Bob Bussey and fourth-place starter John Fowler Jr. in a close three-car battle at the front of the pack.

In the second half of the race, eighth-place starter Brian Johnson made it a four-car battle in the lead pack. On the eighth lap, Fowler passed Bussey for second and reeled in Bender for the lead. With two laps remaining, Fowler made the winning pass using the inside lane in turn two. At the finish, Fowler was victorious by .66 of a second over Bender, Bussey, Johnson, and seventh-place starter Jeremy Kline.
